A good 10% of industrial energy consumption is used up by air compressors.
Lontra has created a rotary/non-reciprocating compressor that has an innovative engineering design.
Compressing air to reach net zero. A ‘revolutionary’ innovation. - YouTube
I’m disappointed in the video. Their system doesn’t address the primary source of inefficiency in large systems: the fact that the air heats up as you compress it.
There are industrial systems that solve this: multi-stage systems with intercoolers between them. Cooling the gases as they’re compressed reduces the work needed to compress further.
But these systems are complex and expensive, and I was hoping to see a device that somehow simplified things. But it’s really just an ordinary single-stage compressor in a different form-factor.
