You used my favorite word.
Yes, I get the pun inherent in the name.

auto-da-fe? Why would the Spanish for “taxi” be your favourite word?
No, I mean defenestration.
Whooooooosh??
Afraid so.
Holy shit, you guys take requests?
I’ll get a list together and email you.
Care to enlighten us witless and unfunny folks?
See my post (post #6 of the thread). – unless you already saw it and just think it’s witless and unfunny.
Oh, I get it now. I managed to miss that post the first time around. Told you I was witless.
Ironically, “auto da fe” actually meant the public announcement of the sentences imposed on persons tried by the Inquisition, not just the public execution of those sentences by the secular authorities. This thread, and all ban announcements could be called literal auto da fes.
Well, except for the fact that they aren’t conducted by the Inquisition–but these days, what is? So this is as close as it gets. Don’t get the wrong idea. I have no gripes with the moderation here.
Having typed that, I wonder if this might be an annoying funny-onces that gets posted twice a week by maroons like me who don’t hang out in ATB. Sorry, guys.
Teo, is that you?
I wonder if it is a trend? [general observation] I know of a couple other places where people with three letter usernames seem to have appointed themselves “junior mods” - maybe I’m just looking for patterns that aren’t there.
I do know I’ve not noticed Q.E.D. enough to make that assumption/observation about him/her specifically … maybe the shorter names are what is sticking out in regards to people’s behaviours online to me.
← points out her user name is four letters long[/general observation]
it’s actually not a bad way to go… if yer trying to make a point. Self-martyrism if you will.
Since SDMB’s new policy of at least giving a semblence of an explanation of why someone is banned… it’s one final way for someone to give voice to thier beef w/ this site.
I think, in part, his beef was how certain mods/admins (and maybe the occassional SDSAB) take the High & Mighty, better than any non-liberal anyday, heavy handed, self-righteous approach to thier duties. Not that any of them have been accused of that lately.
They banned Bill Gates?
(grabbing a pitchfork and lighting a torch)
BAN HIM!
By the way, I now hate Squink with every fiber of my being for getting in the first “defenestration” joke. Nothin’ personal. :smack:
Neener Neener!
Look, gang, the King left the building (apparently through the Window) a long time ago. Can’t we let this rest?
Hmmmm … apparently not :smack:
Lucky he wasn’t the Wind. He could break a leg doing that!
I still don’t get it. You’re saying you found it witty that he picked a phrase and translated it into Latin? Or am I missing something?
(Latin words and phrases are, by the way, very popular at his favorite board, Ars Technica – if you can’t tell by the name.)
Yes, you are obviously missing something. You might try reading the thread all the way through. Case Sensitive was the one who said it was “witty and funny.” I was just responding to sturmhauke’s remark, since it was unclear whether he missed my own earlier explanation, or just didn’t get the joke. I expressed no opinion on whether it was witty or not - I was just kicking myself for not understanding the significance of the name in the first place, given Rex’s abiding affection for Microsoft products.
Well, it sounded like you and Case Sensitive were of the same mind on this, so I figured I could ask either one of you. I’m so sorry I misinterpreted you.
How’s this?
Even after Colibri’s clarification, I still don’t get it. You’re saying you found it witty that he picked a phrase and translated it into Latin? Or am I missing something?
