IMO psychopaths have a very specific face type, eye type, and not-quite-alive expression that you can’t see in person but somehow comes through loud and clear in photos.
My understanding is that Nicole Shanahan has a child with autism. My WAG is that she fell for the hoax that autism was caused by vaccines which led her to support the leading antivax candidate.

About two years ago our daughter was diagnosed with autism, and by virtue of that diagnosis I have a new cause to focus attention on (as has been typical of my experiences, I rarely seek out causes to support, they find me).

You’re right that many of the followers sincerely believe this BS.
But the origin of it is more or less hoaxful; somebody inventing something sensational to sell books and make themselves a celebrity. And many hangers on continue to profitably promote the hoax not because they believe in its factuality, but because they believe in its power to generate money for them by fooling other people.
