Richard Harris is dead

Apparently of complications resulting from Hodgkins Disease. He was 72.

Yes, I just heard and was going to post a thread.

He will be missed.

Bummer. Well, we’ll get to see him one last time soon.

Goodbye, fare thee well, and God’s speed, my Irish brother.

Goodbye, fare thee well, and God’s speed, my Irish brother.

I think I’ll fire up my DVD and watch Harris in my favorite role of his, English Bob in Unforgiven.

English Bob’s parting words: “A plague on you! A plague on the whole stinking lot of ya, without morals or laws! And all you whores got no laws! You got no honor! It’s no wonder you all emigrated to America, because they wouldn’t have you in England! You’re a lot of savages, that’s what you all are. A bunch of bloody savages! A plague on you! I’ll be back!”

:frowning:

What a damned shame… :frowning:

In defiance of the law that says everyone’s supposed to hate “MacArthur Park”, I give you:

There will be another song for me, for I will sing it,
There will be another dream for me; someone will bring it…

Godspeed.

“MacArthur’s Park is melting in the park
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again .”

Good night, Richard. You were one helluva guy.

Sad. At lunch today I just read that he was planning to be in the third Harry Potter movie as well, despite the cancer. The director(?) was quoted as saying “He wasn’t looking well, but he said ‘If you’re f—ing planning on recasting me I’ll f—ing kill you.’ He’s a tough old guy.” (From memory, apologies if I’ve misquoted slightly. I’m sure I’ve got Dick’s part right, at any rate.)

Guess it’s time to dust off Camelot.

In addition to his many memorable screen performances, he was a marvelous guest on The Tonight Show, telling long stories of his theater days and his drunken exploits with Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton. I would kill to have tapes of some of those.

I saw him play King Arthur on stage once, back when I was about 14 or so. My brother and I, a couple of punks at the time, became instant, lifelong Richard Harris fans. He was so cool, and so tough, and so edgy, and so talented. We’d try to act like him in life. Turns out it’s impossible for us mortals to even approach that level of cool.

R.I.P.

When I was in junior high Richard Harris toured with a production of Camelot. Orpheum Theater, downtown Minneapolis. Went down with my mother and sister and fell in love.

Honestly.

Had more daydreams about him than I did any of the teen faves of the day. Hell, he even replaced Matt Dillon!

Funny thing is, I only remember one thing. He said a funny line, and the audience almost but did not quite laugh. Saturday matinee, uptight Midwestern audience - I mean, this was RICHARD HARRIS! We’re supposed to be quiet and respectful, like at church! So he looked at us. Nothing more, nothing less - just looked at us. And even though I (way, WAY up in the nosebleed seats) knew he was manipulating the audience, I STILL laughed along with everyone.

I wish more people could’ve seen that look.

I feel I need to say something…

I am only young (20) compared to Mr Harris, but I feel sad that a man of such obvious talent has passed away, leaving the rest of us to ponder if we can ever match his achievements.
I am no movie buff, but reading his filmography , makes me marvel at what he has achieved. I do not know many actors who can reach out to young people (Harry Potter), as well as the older film goers (The Guns of Naverone), AND play such great characters as Oliver Cromwell, Richard the Lionheart and King Arthur.

It is with sad regret that, like so many others, he will never see his final work hit the big screen, and, with sadder regret, that in one month’s time, he, as with so many others from our generation, will be forgotten by all but a few.

May he Rest in Peace.

Slowly, and oh so sadly, we continue to lose our great ones. :frowning:

RIP, Richard Harris. A man who could truly make the screen shine with his brilliance.

Aye, well done sir. There are few actors today with his charisma and presence.

Don’t let it be forgot
That once there was a spot
For one brief shining moment that was known
As Camelot.

I only saw you once, as Dumbledore, but losing a versatile actor is always sad. Goodbye, Richard.

Did they start shooting HP III yet? Who will they recast as Dumbledore?

What a horrible shame. I really enjoyed him. He was a wonderful actor.
