Rick Sanchez takes on Jon Stewart... and immediately gets fired by CNN

I wonder how Jon is going to deal with this on Monday. It should be fun. I am bummed that I am going to be out of the country on Monday and will miss the show.

When has Jon Stewart ever done this?

Defenses of Stewart for what? What exactly are you saying he’s done that he needs to be defended for? Earlier you said “Stewart is grasping at straws.” I still would like to know what the hell you were referring to. What exactly did Jon Stewart say or do which amounts to “grapsing at straws,” and with what regard was he grasping? Could you please spell out exactly what accusation you are making against Jon Stewart?

He was fired for going into an antisemitic rant on the air.

The assertion that “Jews run the media” is a standard antisemitic conspiracy meme, just like “they own all the banks.” The idea that “Jews control everything” is the core of antisemitic paranoia and demonization.

What do you want to bet this will be Stewart’s headline when he talks about this on Monday’s show?

If it is, I’ll bust a gut laughing

Too obvious.

The better question is, what will be Colbert’s headline?

But that’s not exactly what Sanchez said. At least not in that tone and intent.

The way I see it, his point was that if you have a number people belonging to a certain ethnicity running TV networks – and they do – that disqualifies a member of said ethnicity from the discrimination claim.

But, as with almost any public figure saying something tangentially offending it is quickly construed and suggested as a sign of a deep seated hatred for a particular ethnicity. It is an extreme and malicious interpretation and I’m not even going into the argument that it only applies when one ethnicity or religious group is mentioned. In other words, if a similar statement would mentioned Black, Latinos or Muslims arguing the extreme interpretation would be laughed out and satirized. Hold your horses, I’m looking for cites.

I disagree. I think the tone was pretty clear.

Cite that they do?

Who said Stewart had been discriminated against? Certainly not Stewart. the reporter in this case was pointing out that Stewart was part of ethnic minority – not part of this imaginary “liberal white elite” that Sanchez referred to – and that set Sanchez on on a rant about Jews controlling the media. The notion that Jews are “controlling things” is a classic - THE classic - antisemetic meme, but even pointing to successful Jews is not evidence that antisemitic bigotry still doesn’t exist in the US, or that Stewart can’t have been a victim of it (I would bet anything that Jon Stewart regularly gets antisemitic hate mail and death threats), but importantly, from a business standpoint, a newtork can’t have a loose cannon like that on the air. Sponsors don’t react well to it.

What are you talking about? The only person who claimed he was being discriminated against in this mess is Sanchez.

We’re all commenting on what he does and why, yes. But when he makes jokes about being Jewish and short and unathletic (did you see his first pitch at that Mets game?), I don’t think he’s trying to say he’s cooler than everybody else.

I don’t know how the Sanchez’s English skills were or what jobs they worked. I don’t know how much money any of them made. I do know that they’re guys of similar age who don’t appear to have come from privileged backgrounds, and who worked their way up to prominent places in entertainment. I also know that this still has nothing to do with the jokes Stewart made about Sanchez and that Stewart is not responsible for the debate about the minority status of Jews because he didn’t make any assertions about that.

You said antisemitism is something from the distant past (the '60s to be exact) that no longer exists and I am telling you from first hand experience that it indeed still exists so I’ll state again (and for the final time since this isn’t the pit) you are wrong and have no idea what you were talking about.

Every good comedian knows that sometimes, you have to go for the obvious joke.

Previous Daily Show “Dirty Sanchez” joke regarding Gen. Ricardo Sanchez. I don’t think they’re going to go there again even if it’s been a few years.

Wait a tick. How do any of those quotes you lifted from the Pit thread rebut Quimby’s assertion that he’s personally suffered from anti-semitism in the last three decades? And what does the “thirty years ago” comment have to do with anything?

If you have any doubt that there is still anti-semitism in America, check out this gem shit out by Captain Midnight.

I wouldn’t even deny that there are a lot of Jewish people in entertainment, at all levels of the industry. But saying “the Jews run the media” puts a sinister conspiracy spin on it, that they’re this malevolent shadow group pulling the strings and manipulating honest Americans.

I did not know that the Illuminati are Jewish.

I think it’s obvious what happened. He invented a time machine in the 1960s so he could come forward in time and make sure that by 2010, antisemitism hadn’t completely disappeared. Though perhaps it is too late to save the coasts.

Erm, Captain Midnight, actually.
