Rick Warren. Rick fucking Warren.

IMO, only shame can make people change their bigoted ways. If you give bigots the patina of respectability, you’ve lost the battle right there. You don’t say to a KKK member “Oh, we can just agree to disagree” and sip tea with them.

Comparing Warren to a Klansman is 1) stupid, 2) unrealistic, and 3) counter-productive.

He’s not advocating physical violence against gays or even dislike of gays; he just doesn’t want them to get married. Not quite the same thing as burning crosses on their lawns or hanging them from trees.

More importantly, Warren’s position is, unfortunately, the majority viewpoint, or at least, a plurality viewpoint. The Klan, at its height, never numbered more than 3 million members, so while they were active in local politics, they never gained control of more than a dozen national offices. Marginalizing them lost you nothing, unless you lived in, say, Indiana (in the 20s) or Georgia in the sixties, and if you lived in either of those places you almost certainly agreed with them anyway; marginalizing people who think like Warren loses you half the electorate.

No, just you.

Says the board’s only avowed racist.
