Rifles used by Canadian army in 1890s?

My wife and I were watching an episode of Murdoch Mysteries (great show; you should check it out) last night, and a reference was made to a Canadian soldier having his Lee-Enfield nearby.

That sounded wrong to me; I knew the Canadians used the (horrid) Ross rifle in WWI.

What would a Canadian soldier have carried in 1896?

Probably the Lee-Enfield. It was introduced the year before, and the Ross didn’t get developed until 1905.
