I’m thinking that the gun homicide rate would drop very significantly if access to guns were more restricted and storage and transport laws were much stricter.

If you’re asking my opinion, it would be along the lines of laws requiring registration and regulations about secure storage and restrictions on transport for a start; maybe something like Australia’s buy-back program that was optional or mandatory depending on the type of weapon. And of course careful screening of gun purchasers.

They have had gun buy backs all across America.

I have heard many gun aficionados brag about how fast they can get into their gun safes, even on this board. They do make safes that are hard to get into if you don’t have access, and easy if you do.

Yes, and your discounting of the massive number of guns that are sold legally into the blackmarket is odd, but I would up the requirements for ownership of some guns as well.

A good gun control policy means that law abiding responsible gun owners have a bit more red tape to get through, and irresponsible or criminal people have a very hard time getting them.

Currently, in order to prevent gun owners any inconvenience at all, we instead make nearly all guns available to everyone, no matter how irresponsible or criminal.

And you don’t think those “gun murders” would be replaced, at least to some degree, with knife murders or other types of murder?

If you’re asking my opinion, it would be along the lines of laws requiring registration and regulations about secure storage and restrictions on transport for a start; maybe something like Australia’s buy-back program that was optional or mandatory depending on the type of weapon. And of course careful screening of gun purchasers. If you reduce the likelihood of a dangerous nut acquiring a gun legitimately and also make them harder to steal, it goes a long way. The long-term goal would be to fundamentally change the gun culture.

It sounds like you want to confiscate guns. e.g. mandatory buybacks.

No, they are not. One of the countries with the absolutely lowest rates of gun violence is the UK, which is racially diverse. Though I have no idea what gun violence has to do with race. There’s a very close correlation with poverty, which is a completely different issue.

Wait. What? The UK is racially diverse? Its 90%+ white.
