Has anyone out there seen the Japanese horror movie Ring? (If you haven’t and you like scary/suspenseful movies, GO SEE IT!!!) It’s been a while since I saw it, but it still gives me the willies sometimes just thinking about it, and has probably topped the charts as the scariest movie in my books. There are two sequals (well, one sequal, one prequel), and I haven’t seen the second one, but I do have a question about Ring II (spoilers ahead).
Did they finally end the curse, or not? And what did Sato mean when she said “Why are you the only one who is saved?” Did she mean “Why are you the only one safe from me?” or was it a reference to the fact that someone was pulling the girl and boy (I forgot the girl’s name) out of the well when noone came to rescue her? I feel it’s more the latter, and that the curse is still in effect, but my friend Liz feels it’s the first, and that now that they are safe from her, they’ve defeated her and the curse is ended. Anyone else got any ideas?
I loved that movie! The sequels weren’t as good though.
Interestingly, there are actually two divergent sequels (along with the prequel, Ring 0): Ring 2, which is more of a direct continuation of Ring, and Rasen (alson titled The Spiral) which was the author’s sequel to the first book, and which goes in more of a sci-fi direction. Both films start from morgue room where the father’s body is being autopsied.
Both films have the same set characters (both tending to focus on Mai (the father’s college-student girlfriend, played by Miki Nakatani in all three movies), but different things happen to them. Some characters who survive to the end of **Rasen/b] die halfway through Ring 2, and vice-versa.
I won’t give away the what happens in Ring 2, but I’d recommend making a little wager with your friend Liz.
I can’t answer your question because I’ve not seen the sequel (nor the prequel). I do agree - it is one surreal and scary movie. I’ve heard that there’s a US remake in the works - anyone knows when that will be released?
Whoops, I meant to hit preview, not post. Oh well, toss in an extra brace and a close parenthesis as needed.
Anyway, I also wanted to add that Ring was the first movie to really scare me since I saw The Shining at age 10.
I loved Ring! Scariest movie since The Exorcist. I watched it by myself, in the dark. I had it playing on my husband’s laptop since the DVD wouldn’t work with our TV (even tho the DVD was Region 0, the TV needed PAL format).
So when that scene (you know the one!) happened, the action was up close and personal. I actually had to sleep with a light on, something I haven’t had to do since I was a kid.
I have no desire to see the sequels or prequel. The movie was so perfect, I don’t want to taint it with inferior follow-ups. Just thinking about the movie can creep me out, and I want to keep it that way.
