Ringing the Connection Bell

Sometimes artists make allusions to other favorite or influential works. If you recognize the connection you might feel a moment of satisfaction at “getting” it. Here is a strange one that happened to me:

I was watching *Almost Famous * with some friends and something about the opening credits struck me as familiar. The opening sequence shows a child writing on a pad of paper as the camera does a close-up pan across the desktop revealing its contents. The technique reminded me of another movie and I asked my friends if they noticed the resemblance. I explained that *To Kill A Mockingbird * opened with a child scribbling on paper as the camera did the same close pan.

Shortly after *Almost Famous * begins the first words of dialogue are spoken about Atticus Finch, Calpurnia, and Boo Radley. When I heard this the connection bell rang in my head. (Hmmm… Coincidence?)
