Rio500 Problems

I received a Rio500 MP# player for Christmas and it worked perfectly until I upgraded the firmware and now the player does not work. Here is a more detailed description:

FTR the thing is going in the mail today to be returned to the factory but from the tone of the letter I received I am worried about a big IT’S YOUR FAULT WE WON’T FIX IT response.

My issue is not to knock the Rio500 or any of their tech support but I am curious, have any other dopers experienced similar problems with their Rio500’s and if so how was the problem resolved?

Also, some of the above links may not be perfect since VBulletin didn’t parse them exactly correctly and I’m a bit lazy.

      • I have a Rio500 installed on a Win98 system w/a powered USB hub. One day the player couldn’t get detected, and I found eventually that the PC software cannot find the player if the player’s cable is not either plugged directly into a PC USB plug, or into the first plug on the USB hub I have. I tried experimenting with everything else, and that is all that makes the difference. I have version 2.1.5 also, and have had no problems beyond that.
  • What it would do is instead of finding the player after a couple seconds when you press the “Hardware” button on the Rioport Audio Manager program, the button and the screen of the program will alternately blink “live” on-off (gray-blue, in my case) about once per second, the Rio500 display would blink “blank” (the startup test) also, and you’d have to ctrl-alt-del to shut down the [non-respondng] Rioport PC program. At the time, I couldn’t find any similar problem mentioned on the Rioport help boards. - MC
