Riots in Copenhagen (Ungdomshuset)

Why do you keep referring to them as naive kids? Are you being purposefully disingenuous? From what I’ve heard, many of the evictees are into their thirties (from Danish posters on other sites). “Naive kids” isn’t a term I’d use to describe a group that hordes Molotov cocktails and other assorted weaponry and writes an open invitation for like-minded idiots across Europe to trash a city. I prefer “criminals”.

I refered to them as such, because some of them are. That doesn’t mean “criminals” doesn’t aply as well. I if you don’t like the term “naive”, just remove it. The point still stands.

To clarify, I’m not defending what they did; I’m pointing out that this could have been handled better.

Be fair now. That’s not the same people. (right-wing extremists?).

Exactly.

What now?

In my opinion: They reap what they sowed. Admitted, it’s probably a very small percentage that actually stirred up trouble - BUT then the peaceful demonstrants should have done something about those bad apples - shown the nation that that’s not the kind af dialogue they endorse. Instead they, at best, were passive.

If all the protests had been peaceful, they hadn’t thrown stones at the police and set fire to people’s cars - then I’d be all for giving them an alternative place to be. Now - not so much.

There’s plenty of space for those who are different - as long as they abide by the laws in this country like everybody else.

But again - maybe I’m just jaded from this past week. I would usually place myself as leftist on the political scale - but listening to the demonstrators I’m apparantly not even in sight of the left end of the scale.

But then, they also claim to be openminded.

Last I heard the fund will still sponsor a place for the young people. So they will have a place to be - but if they react like they did before - where they were offered a similar deal - they’ll probably say no, because they want the government to give it to them.

And to restate a point: the house was sold only AFTER the inhabitants broke the agreement for the house. (posted a quote and link upthread).

This whole incident reminds me of a huge riot in one of the bigger cities in Sweden during the early 2000’s (don’t quote me on the date). It started off as a demonstration against the European Union and an estimated 50,000 activists took part. As you can imagine, it didn’t take long for the leftist fundamentalists to attack the police which started a series of riots which resulted in one of the activists getting shot. Now this was unheard of in Sweden. It created a huge scandal; people were shaken by the fact that the police had used live ammunition against a “peaceful” activist. The truth was that there was a few policeman that had already been hit by cobblestones, one of them had headinjuries. They then saw the demonstrator coming towards them with a rock in hand and when he threw it the injured cop felt his life was in danger and shot the guy in the flank. He was rushed to the hospital and, although he was close to dying, the surgeons saved his life but he lost a kidney.
He appeared on TV numerous times afterwards with a tear jerking story about how he was wrongfully shot and how he had no intention of hurting the policemen.
What a bunch of bullshit. When you watched the video of this guy running towards to cops, everything you can deduce as an impartial observer screams that this guy had malice towards anything authoritarian. And, what, I’m supposed to hate the police for shooting him? He got what was coming.
