Oh, wow. New Orleans will be in mourning for a year, as we all should be. What an amazing pianist, composer, producer and talent.
Thank you for the music, sir.
Minor nit, given the sentiment of this thread which I support fully: it is “Toussaint” - I will see if the Mods can correct.
Toussaint, meaning “All Saints” – quite appropriate for a NOLA figure. And what a fine body of work.
Thanks…I should know better than to trust my instincts when trying to get a post out before the morning rush - good catch.
May I suggest that anyone interested post links to their favorite Toussaint-penned tunes here? After all, the man was all about the music, and I’m sure we’ll all find new tunes - it’s a vast catalog with multiple great versions.
I’ll start with one of my faves:
I was really sad to read about his passing this morning. I’ve only become more familiar with his work in the last year or so because of a Pandora station. His cover of “Chokin’ Kind” is one of those “where have you been all of my life” songs that are so rewarding to “discover” later in life.
As for covers of songs that Toussaint wrote, here’s “Fortune Teller” from the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss album “Raising Sand.”
Another terrible day for music. He gave a concert in Portland last year. Unfortunately, I had a planned trip to the Midwest. My wife had a ticket, but it was one of those 100+ degree days that were common this past summer, and she decided not to attend. She’s very distraught about that this morning.
Truly sad news. ♫ ♬ ♪
That video is. . .regrettable.
I saw his solo concert last year and it was amazing, including hits like “Working in a Coalmine”, and he was the friendliest entertainer I’ve seen. He played a medley including a syncopated version of a Chopin polonaise.
I never saw him perform live, but got to meet him at The Blues Foundation’s 2012 Hall of Fame Inductees Awards dinner in Memphis, TN. He was a very well-spoken & gracious man.
N’awlins and the blues world will sorely miss him.
I wish I could go to his funeral.
Ok, well howzabout Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky (From Now On) - Claudia Lennear
That sucks. Got to see him in concert almost exactly this time last year. He’ll be missed.
One of my favorite moments in the great show “Treme” was when Antoine was asked to sit in on a session being conducted by Toussaint. And the song they were working up: Lloyd Price singing “Stagger Lee!”
Pure gold!
RIP
I love “Mother-in-Law” and its identical twin “Lipstick Traces.”
I saw him on Austin City Limits a few years ago when I didn’t really understand the depth of who he was. At first, I thought I might gloss over it, but got entranced by the talent. I liked it so much I watched (and appreciated) it 2 or 3 more times before it got erased from the DVR. One night I even called the kids in, telling them “Now you guys pay attention… this is one of the masters”.
I remember being surprised as he started playing “Southern Nights” to close the show. I thought it interesting that he was covering a Glen Campbell song. Then I promptly asked myself, “Well, just who DID write that song, anyway?” A quick trip to the Google brought my chagrin.
