Goodbye Doris Wishman, the filmaker who gave us such classics as:
Nude on the Moon
Deadly Weapons
Double Agent 73
Bad Girls Go to Hell
It can be truly said that they don’t make 'em like that anymore.
Sad turn of events, considering she was working on a comeback film (or may have completed it).
A few years ago, I missed a chance to see Wishman do a in-person Q and A session at the Charles Theatre…much like I missed a chance to see Charles Bukowski read at a local college back in the late 80’s. The Moral? If you get opportunities to meet your idols, don’t hesitate, cause more often than not they’re gone before you know it.
I’ve seen several of her films, and thought most of them were good campy fun but Bad Girls Go to Hell is some kind of masterpiece.
I saw Double Agent 73 and Deadly Weapons (which a seminary student told me about!!) because they starred the amazing “Chesty” Morgan, who held court at the Teddy Bear Lounge in Boston when I was a student there. I never saw the rest of her ouvre, although I read about it in Re/Search’s book of Very Strange Films. I’ll have to look them up.
