RIP Gloria Winters (Penny from Sky King)

Story. I was never a fan of the show, but it was popular in its day. Interesting that she retired after the show went off the air.

Remember the show, but not her so much. RIP, anyway.

Awww. Now Jimmy doesn’t have anybody to write fan letters to.

Before my time and I’ve never seen an episode, but dad liked the Cessna 310 that was used in the show.

I remember her and the show; watched it every Saturday. Sorry to hear this.

That’s Niece Penny. Awww… I watched Sky King. It was on my regular Saturday a.m. line-up.

“Out of the blue of the western sky comes… Sky King”.

Now I feel old.

I watched it every Saturday morning, too. I’m sorry to hear this.

I remember it well, particularly Penny. A woman of action! Drama! Perky, too!
What not to love??

RIP, Penny.

You can watch the entire series here.

Tidbit: Kirby Grant died in a car crash on the way to watch a Challenger launch, and to be honored by the astronaut corps for helping inspire them.

Thanks, Gloria, and farewell.

How would you folks feel about a nostalgia thread dealing with all these old shows?

My memories include the radio versions.

Just a partial list of such:

The Lone Ranger
Sergeant Preston
Sky King
Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders (may be inaccurate title)
Big Jon and Sparky
Smilin’ Ed O’Connell (again, could be the wrong title)

The Shadow
The Whistler
Gangbusters
Philo Vance
Boston Blackie
Johnny Dollar
True Detective Mysteries

Inner Sanctum
One Step Beyond

Jeebus, how freakin’ old are you? I’m 63 and never heard of most of those.

68 until December.

We didn’t have our own TV until 1955 when I was yet to be 14.

Even then I preferred radio versions of shows. The TV versions were nowhere near as good as my imagination.

I didn’t want to detract from the mood of your thread but was curious if the folks here had interest in another thread where we could swap lies about the old stuff.

Used to watch SK, and I remember her for saying “Gosh, Uncle Sky!”, although I wonder if it’s a manufactured memory.

.

Damn, beat me to that cultural reference. RIP, Gloria.

Most of my friends are younger than I am, and I have to explain that JB line to them. But they still don’t get it. They don’t know what it was like to watch those Saturday AM TV shows. Oh well, we all get old sometime. Kids these days, though…

Having never seen an episode, I chose one at random. I picked #56 from the list, assuming that I’d see the C-310. Turns out that one is ‘Two-Gun Penny’ from the first season. It has a very young Jill St. John as a guest star.

Besides, Sky King, Saturday for me was either Fury or My Friend Flicka (I forget which–maybe it was both), The Lone Ranger, Sergeant Preston, Ramar of the Jungle.

Also I remember Roy Rogers and Casey Jones. Not to mention I Love Lucy, Our Miss Brooks, December Bride.

All TV, not radio.

Oh and don’t get me started on the soap operas that my mother used to watch during the week while she was doing household tasks.

Yup, I’m a TV kid and it never ended…

Thanks for the trip through the way back machine - I’d forgotten some of those. For me it was Sky King, My Friend Flicka and Fury. That’s after the 2 hours of cartoons, of course.

Awwww. I remember SK, loved it when I was a kid. And when it went off the air, for the first time I realized TV shows don’t go on forever.

And right after that, the plane flew toward the camera, and the old Nabisco logo would come whirling out of it to stop facing front.
