RIP: Lillian Leach

I missed it, it seems, but Lillian Leach of the Mellows died a couple of weeks ago. This was a 50’s group now only remembered by record collectors, but they’re a striking case-in-point about how little of what is going on in the music of an era is represented by the top 40’s charts. The Mellows were fantastic, and Leach was in particular. You can hear a tribute show about her at the Vintage Group Harmony Show website. In particular, not to be missed is Smoke from Your Cigarette. Marv Goldberg also has a bio and discography of the group from whose Yesterday’s Memories he took the name of his own group harmony broadcast.

Cool - I had not heard of her or The Mellows - thank you for posting about them. She has a great voice - Smoke from Your Cigarette has her almost sounding like a female Nat King Cole - great, warm tone in her voice…

As a fan of ‘beach music’, here’s the one by her that I was familiar with. “Loveable Lily”
