That is a great disc. Liz Phair can sing “Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper, and Snork” and make it sound sexy. The Reverend Horton Heat does the Jonny Quest Theme in scorched-earth rockabilly guitar.
I just saw Liz Phair last night. Oddly, that one didn’t make the setlist. ![]()
So Land of the Lost was really interesting as a cultural artifact because it attracted a lot of top-notch (and maybe some middle-notch) SF writing talent looking for a quick paycheck. Larry Niven, Ben Bova, Theodore Sturgeon (who would no doubt happily tell you 90% of everything is crap while he cashed his check), David Gerrold and Norman Spinrad all wrote episodes.
LotL had some big concept (well, maybe middle concept) stuff going on, which is one of the reasons it was oddly compelling at times for a schlocky Saturday morning children’s show.
I was at that show! It was great.
I was a little too young for the classic run of Krofft shows, but I have an uncertain memory of seeing something in the early 80s on NBC that could have been one of the “Krofft Superstars” reruns.
I remember loving Puffnstuff, LOTL, and some others.
LOTL definitely had something. SPOILER from Eenik The Altrusian “The Sleestak are NOT what my people used to be. They are what we will become.”
In another episode, the Sleestak sacrifice throwbacks who display inteligence.
In another, Holly discovers that a pair of British men have travelled here earlier. Holly and friends discover two things- the sleestak hibernate and that the two British men died looking for a magic portal that doesn’t exist.
ETA- There’s an artist in Oregon who goes around in a gorgeous costume they made. Google Portland Sleestak.
I loved all of the Sid and Marty Krofft stuff, even The Brady Bunch Variety Hour and Donnie and Marie. I was 10 in 1976, the perfect age. Plus, I had no taste.
They also did Pryor’s Place w/ Richard Pryor. I thought that show was outstanding.
I’d forgotten the Kroftts did many, many shows apart from the well known examples like LoTL. I looked up a list and had vivid flashbacks after noticing the Bay City Rollers show. That was a crazy bit of television. I even had one of their albums (actually a cassette) when I was a kid because I’d seen them on TV.
