RIP Pioneer Cabin, Calaveras Big Trees State Park

Damn, :frowning:

Hiking Calaveras Big Trees State Park and walking through this giant was the highlight of my 1991 trip to California. I hiked Yosemite too.

Makes me sad that others won’t enjoy this wonderful tree.

Sf gate has a slideshow of other tree’s that feature a similar drive-thru or walk-thru experience.

Well, we’ll be still be able to enjoy it, but in a horizontal rather than vertical orientation.

I’m sure there are plans to put up some new interpretive signs up that talk about the fallen giant’s history and it’s role in the ecology of the forest floor.

That’s true. It’ll take decades to turn to dust.

Unless a furniture maker shows up with a chainsaw. That tree would make some gorgeous tables. Maybe even some musical instruments.

It’s a shame they leave them out there to rot. But I know that’s what the park service does.

The really sad part is that if no one had been around we could finally have answered that age old question…
