RIP Segway

Speaking of electric scooters (and electric bicycles):
why did the inventor of the Segway work so hard to invent something totally new (and complicated,with the whole gyroscope thing)?
Couldn’t he have just taken the electric motor off the segway and put it on a bicycle?
And why did it take another 15 years before somebody else did it, making electric bikes and scooters widely available?

I think that you are missing the point of “inventing”. And it was a spin-off of his work on a better wheelchair.

I remember seeing a TV news report about that wheelchair. It seemed so cool; the thing could rise, so the person in the chair could reach something on a high shelf, or it could go up or down a staircase, or over a curb. Too bad it never succeeded and it cost too much.
