RIP Shelley Duvall

Shelley Duvall has died, just days after her 75th birthday.

The Shining actress died on Thursday, July 11, at her home in Blanco, Texas, from complications from diabetes, her partner Dan Gilroy told The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.

She was so pretty. I still quote her from Popeye: ‘I said pfui, and I meant pfui.’

So Olive Oyl has been reunited with her Popeye. I’ll be sure to have a heaping helping of spinach tonight.

RIP!

Yeah, Popeye, but I thought she was the perfect pick for her role in The Shining.

She’s great in both and I learned recently, at least as I understand it, that Kubrick was not overly mean to her during production of the Shining.

She was indeed born to be Olive Oyl.

Interesting; all I’d heard for years was the opposite.

She made a real contribution with her Faerie Tale Theatre project, as well as with her acting roles. Condolences to all her friends and family.

i really enjoyed faerie tale theatre. those were fun.

Me too. Here is a brief snippet of the legend being discussed. It really came out of the behind-the-scenes that Kubrick’s daughter made during the movie.

That’s too bad. She was a wonderful actress. NYT did a really great feature piece just a few months back (April 2024); she had some indie projects coming up then. Gift link, hope it works even though the preview has crashed for some reason:

That’s what I remember her from as well.

Faerie Tale Theatre was the first thing I thought of. A fine legacy. :smiling_face_with_tear:

I first took notice of Shelley Duvall in Bernice Bobs Her Hair when it was aired in 1976 (on PBS?). It’s a F Scott Fitzgerald short story with an O’Henry twist that I enjoyed, but Duvall’s acting really made it work. What a strange lady up there on the screen! She was mesmerizing to watch.

WHAT??

I just saw the headline elsewhere. Oh, Shelly!

B-b-b-b-but I’M 75…

The first “Wow!” role I remember her in is Altman’s Thieves Like Us with Keith Carradine and John Schuck.

She was so good even small roles in things like Annie Hall stick out.

And Roxanne–great foil for Steve Martin.

If you watch the ‘making of’ you will come away with an opposite understanding.

Condolences to her family.

I almost am AND I have diabetes!

Yes, that’s where the story came from. I mentioned it above. His daughter made that.

As were Tall Tales & Legends.

Shelley Duvall was incredible in Three Women (1977) repeatedly performing lengthy, rambling and overbearingly pathetic monologues, yet somehow managing to avoid grating on viewer nerves. It’s not a film I would necessarily recommend (or watch twice), but it does feature great acting by all three leads including Sissy Spacek and Janice Rule.

I loved that! I think it was part of their American Playhouse series on PBS.

I liked that one, too.

What a fascinating discussion–thanks for linking it! (The explanation of why the legend came about, being based on Kubrick’s character as known to many, really does make sense.)
