Stephen Ambrose dead at age 66.
Whatever his flaws as an academic, the nation owes Ambrose a debt of gratitude for preserving the oral histories of WWII veterans – particularly those of below the ranks of senior officers. He also made history accessible for those who might otherwise not be interested. He will be missed.
