Rather dismayed to learn of Tanith Lee’s passing. The Flat Earth series and the Don’t Bite the Sun/Drinking Sapphire Wine duology are among my favorite books.
Sad news. I adored “Kill the Dead” not least for the “Paul Darrow/Parl Dro” joke.
The “White As Snow” perversions of familiar fairy tales was also a delight. Very saucy stuff.
I’m blanking right now; can someone remind me… The Birthgrave books, and “Quest for the White Witch” – I’m remembering this book as derivative of a classical Greek myth… Was it a retelling of Oedipus Rex? It was quite good, but…a retelling.
(“The memory is the second thing to go…”)
The ending of Quest for the White Witch has the main character realizing he and his mother (who was the main character of The Birthgrave) would be the perfect mates for each other. But the icky connotations of incest are mostly missing, so it’d be a rather subversive take on the Greek myth.
So, right in her wheelhouse.
Only things of hers I’ve read. I don’t know why - I rather liked those. I should probably give some more of her work a chance. And for some reason I never knew she was British.
RIP.
Ah, crap. Met her at the World SF con in 1987, she was lovely.
Likewise loved her Don’t Bite the Sun & the Flat Earth series.
Bugger.
It’s a real shame that she died just a week before The Birthgrave is reissued by DAW for it’s 40th anniversary. Official release date, the 2nd June but it’s probably in the shops now.
One of my fav female authors of all time.
She could be very dark, very decadent.Much cruelty in her stories.
Lotta output. I can only think of a few which were duds - mostly her science fiction/horror ones: Lycanthia, Sabrina…
The Death’s Master trilogy is epic.
