RO alert: British tabloids sink to an all-time shit-sucking low

Of all the things that can be perverted, “the course of justice” must be the most boring among them.

Apparently she’s also said:

So while we can’t say yet how formal justice will be served, it’s pretty clear that the poetic variant is available in full measure.

Oh man, and I forgot this: a Parliamentary committee declared that Rupert Murdoch “is not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company.”

In the grand scheme of things this is just abuse rather than an indicator that he’s in any sort of actual trouble (yet), but nonetheless it’s a sign of which way the wind is blowing.

There is an excellent front cover on this week’s Private Eye. It headed “Salem Witch Trial”, features photo of Rebekah and has this caption:-

The story so far: It is New England in the year of Our Lord 2012, and diabolical goings-on have led the Wichfinder General being called in to determine who is guilty of bewitching whom. A simple girl, Rebekah, confesses to being a disciple of the Devil, known as Murdoch, and begins to denounce the good folk of the town for consorting with the Evil One…

They also had a very good comparison in number crunching this week:

1 Comments to undercover journalists which rendered Vince Cable unfit to judge BSKYB takeover.

161 Emails to and from News Corp lobbyists which apparently do not render Jeremy Hunt unfit to judge ongoing media regulation.

And still it gets worse:-

Andy Coulson held in Tommy Sheridan trial perjury inquiry

*Prime Minister David Cameron’s former director of communications Andy Coulson has been detained by police investigating allegations of perjury.

Mr Coulson, 44, was detained at his home in the Dulwich area of London at 06:30 by seven officers from Strathclyde Police.

He is being held on suspicion of committing perjury at the trial of former MSP Tommy Sheridan in 2010.

Mr Coulson is being taken to Glasgow, where he will be questioned.

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers from Strathclyde Police’s Operation Rubicon team detained a 44-year-old man in London this morning under section 14 of the Criminal Procedure Scotland Act 1995 on suspicion of committing perjury before the High Court in Glasgow.”*

*Business Secretary Vince Cable has said “veiled threats” were made against the Liberal Democrats when he was assessing News Corporation’s 2010 bid for BSkyB.

He told the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics his party was warned it would be “done over” in the firm’s newspapers if he ruled against its takeover attempt.

Mr Cable was removed from his role after being secretly recorded saying he had “declared war” on Rupert Murdoch.*

[snark]

What - you mean the public’s opinion of the Lib Dems could be worse?

[/snark]

There’s a good analysis hereof what exactly detention means in Scots Law.

Briefly - he’s not been charged, still less arrested. He can held and questioned for an initial 12 hours, which can then be extended for a further 12 provided the police can show a) good reason and b) that they’re not dragging their feet. It’s only in the last year or so that detainees under this Act have had the right to lawyers, but he will be able to consult one before or during questioning.

Given that the cops’ first move has been to drive Coulson from London to Glasgow - a good 8 hour journey if you’re mindful of speed limits - it looks like Andy will get to spend a full day in the custody of the Glasgow’s finest. It’s a hard life.

They cops must have a pretty good idea of how this will play out though. It looks like a bit of an open and shut case, given what we’ve learned since the Sheridan case. Presumably, they’ve waited until now to make their move as they’ve been getting all their ducks in a row before bringing him in for questioning

Yep, arrested and charged now

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-18262740

obviously he isn’t guilty, he has already denied it and says he will fight the case - so the police must definitely have it wrong.

So, the Leveson report is out, and early reports suggest it sounds fairly reasonable (not read all 2000 pages myself)

Cameron is already trying to play down the idea of any new legislation though. An independent body to self regulate the press without any new legislation backing it up? Sounds a bit familiar. I wonder which Murdoch came up with that idea

I’m not terribly familiar with this case, but it seems a lot of people have already been charged with crimes related to wiretapping and perjury and bribery. What new crimes need to be defined? What new legislation?

The former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has been found guilty of conspiring to hack phones with others between 2000 and 2006.

Fellow ex-editor Rebekah Brooks has been cleared of all charges by the jury at the Old Bailey.

Prime Minister David Cameron is sorry he hired Coulson.

Rebekah Brooks found not guilty of two counts of conspiracy to pay public officials, despite saying before a Parliamentary select committee “We have paid police for information in the past.”

Not that it was a white wash or anything

Hush now. We in the UK have one of the best justice systems money can buy.

I very much doubt anyone has bought anything. Criminal charges are very hard to prove. Anyone got a link to something that actually provides an analysis of the evidence? All the stories I can find are the usual complete fluff.
