RO System 'overheating'

I have a Zero Waste RO system to filter my drinking water. In fact, I have this RO System: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10034720&Ntt=filtration&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial&s=1&N=5000043&Mo=36&No=28&Ntk=Text_Search&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&lang=en-US&Sp=S&search=filtration&topnav=&Nty=1

It had been installed and working great since about August/September of 2009. I recently moved and took the system with me to my new place. It was just installed this previous weekend but now the system isn’t working. The issues are as follows:

  1. The pump does not shut off when the tank is full (which causes the transformer (?) to generate some decent heat).

  2. The water that comes out of the RO’s faucet is hot. Not tepid, not slightly warm, but HOT.

Obviously, I unplugged the system to not cause overheating/electrical issues, but I thought we have smart people here - maybe someone can give me some troubleshooting ideas. Or even a solution.

The person that will be performing the work is handy and knows his way around electrical and plumbing (has actually completely plumbed and wired houses - not licensed, but all work was done by permit & inspected) so you don’t have to dumb it down for me (who knows nothing except how to turn the faucet on and off).

Sounds like the “tank full” sensor is faulty. See if the pump shuts off if you manually activate it (open or short the contacts, depending on the type of sensor).

I’m an idiot! I forgot to add that if you manually turn the tank off (there is a little ‘butterfly’ thingy on top of the tank), the pump will shut off. It will stay shut off when you turn the tank back on, but the second you turn the faucet on the pump starts up again.

That sounds like the sensor is mis-adjusted. I don’t know anything about your particular setup, but I suspect that the sensor is pressure-activated, and yours is now set to shut off at too high a pressure. See if there is any way to adjust it.
