LANCASTER, California (AP) – Residents of northern Los Angeles County are not grooving to this music.

Lancaster city officials said this week that they’re paving over a quarter-mile strip of asphalt grooved to play the William Tell Overture when auto tires speed over it.

The road was completed this month as part of an ad campaign for Honda. It’s engineered to play the overture – also known as the theme to “The Lone Ranger” – at perfect pitch for motorists driving Honda Civics at 55 mph.

I used to wonder if it’d be possible to cut grooves in the road, so that it would play a horrible tune if you went over the speed limit.

Would have been fun to experience, but would have gotten old very quickly.

It reminds me of a short story I read in high school. Roads were engineered and repaved frequently so that they’d be noisy and wear out tires so that people would have to buy new tires to match the new pattern.
