"Road to Perdition" plot question **BIGASS SPOILER ENCLOSED**

What tips off Tom Hanks that the photographer who chats him up in the diner is out to kill him?

Tom seems to have a “eureka moment” when he sees the guy’s yellow teeth. How was that a giveaway? Or was it something else I missed?

I think it was a combination of the fact that he knew SOMEBODY was out looking for him, so he was super paranoid to begin with and the way the guy kept darting his eyes towards the cop, waiting for him to leave. I saw it at a screening almost a week ago, so I don’t recall if there was anything in the dialogue that might’ve given it away.

I might be way off here, but this is something that I thought of. He was kinda out in the middle of nowhere - and his job was photographing dead bodies for various newspapers? Why would he be out there? Plus, on top of that, he had a bit of an Irish accent, so it would seem kind of out of place to be out there in the country.

That was the impression that I got, anyway.

And while we’re already on spoilers, I thought that the shootout at the end (when Rooney was killed) was really well done. I liked the lack of gunshots in favor of music and the framing was really cool, too. Altogether, an amazing scene.

I’m not sure if Hanks ‘knew’ that the guy was out to get him but he figured him out as bad news.

The same way he knew to move up and stop the guy at the wake.

But from Hanks’ facial expressions, I assumed that he had figured out htat the guy was a killer before he even heard him speak. Did anyone else view it that way?

No I didn’t see that at all. I think at first he was startled to see such a creepy guy, plus he’d been up a while and was edgy. He starts to relax a little bit as he talks to the guy and then slowly grows suspicious again. That’s the impression I got anyway.

I think what tips him off is that the guy says he takes pictures of the dead, then Hanks notices he has his camera out and ready, like someone is gonna be dead shortly.

They definitely showed something in Hanks’ eyes when he saw Law’s yellow teeth.

What I was assuming is that Hanks had heard of the Jude Law character (“hey, we got this guy up in Chicago that is a real freak; you’d never think he was a hitman with that slouch of his, plus he gets off on taking pictures of the people he just killed. Can’t stand his breath though, you’d think with all the money he makes he could afford a slightly less yellow shade of teeth.”)

After all, the Jude Law character was familiar with Hanks, I see no reason it couldn’t have been reciprocal.
