Roadblock in NYS to check inspection stickers ... normal?

Just moved to upstate NY a year and a bit ago. My wife got stopped in a long line of cars today (noon-ish) because … the police had set up a roadblock to check inspection stickers? WTF? Never heard of such a thing before. Is this common?

Can’t speak for NY state, but this happen very occasionally in Louisiana and Mississippi. I’ve only seen it initiated by local authorities, though – not by state police. Others MMV.

It’s fairly common in New Jersey. It’s not a stretch to imagine they’re as common in New York, too. I’ve even seen them with portable emissions inspection gear.

They also do seatbelt checks in NYS. I’ve been pulled over into a line for them to check before in Rensselaer county.

Here in CT, they do them on the interstate off-ramps.* Just park a cruiser at the stop light at the end. Also check seatbelts at the same time.

  • Or at least they did, until they screwed up the emissions inspection system so badly that they had to cancel it and give everyone indefinite extensions, that are still ongoing.

Some of the municipalities in the St. Louis area require residents to have “city stickers”, another fund raiser. It’s not uncommon for them to have roadblocks to check for the stickers. Particularly at the exits of apartment complexes where they can get a good haul.

Yes common in NY

Yep, pretty common here in Otsego County NY. They’ll check for seatbelts, inspection and registration stickers all at the same time.
