Roadshow films

While searching online for old films, I notice references to “roadshow” versions of films. What exactly were they?

They were films, often with limited showings in big theaters, where you purchased tickets for a specific showing. Back when I was a kid your standard movie theater allowed you to walk in any time and stay as long as you wanted.

Sometimes they even sold programs. I have one for 2001, and one for “Around the World in 80 Days.” After the 2001 roadshow period was over I also saw it in a normal theater, not in Cinerama, and was able to stay for 2 showings.
