I noticed in your linked thread, Elendil’s Heir, that some people seemed to have had a problem with the supernatural overtones in the movie, and that it was un-Holmesian. Poppycock!

It was also pointed out that Doyle made pretty extensive use of the faux-supernatural, and that just as in a Doyle story, all of the supernatural-appearing elements in the movie were then later proven to be chicanery.

I found it entirely natural that a sorcerous cult-leader would be a villain in a story set in the 1890’s. After all, there was an explosion of charlatanry and spiritualism around that time. The choice of villains had undeniable historical verisimilitude.

I don’t know why people seem so locked in on Holmes being a staid, dry, bloodless detective. He plainly was not that way in the stories. Doyle’s stories were the sensationalist pulp of their time. Nothing at all wrong with throwing in some ass-kicking.
