What’s the deal? I go to turn on my favorite radio station today and instead of hearing my rock 'n roll favorites my car was flooded with the rhythmic beats of hip-hop and R & B!!
I was last listening to Rock 97 on Friday and there was no mention that they were going off the air. Does anyone know if they have simply changed frequencies (doubtful as I have already checked) or are they gone forever?
Unfortunately, Steel Wheels, you’re out of luck. There was a short article in Saturday or Sunday’s Herald discussing the format change. Rock 97 is gone for good (or at least until the next format change) and the station is now an R&B/modern dance format called KISS 97 (not to be confused with the old KISS 96.9 that played new country and pop).
Why can’t radio programmers in this city ever try something truly new and innovative? A more eclectic mix of music, or more modern music? I’ve occasionally dreamed of a radio station called “B-sides and Outtakes” that only plays non-hit songs by well known bands; for example, the Clash recorded hundreds of songs, but all you ever hear on the radio is Train in Vain or the occasional Should I Stay or Should I Go. Would it kill anyone to play Career Opportunities, Police and Thieves, or Safe European Home once in a while?
Thanks for confirming my worst nightmare burntsand. R.I.P. Rock 97
Rock 97 was horrible anyway. No talent on there at all, except for Beasley.
I liked the music, about 10 percent of the time. The rest of the time it was Can Con garbage, and hair metal junk like Ratt and Judas Priest.
CJ92’s company, Standard, was set to start an Urban station in the future, so this flip by Rogers really changes their outlook.
I say good riddance to Rock 97, with their cheesy music, and their zero air staff.
Right now the only bets for good radio in Calgary are CJAY and Shine FM.
I don’t listen to the radio much anymore, but 97 was the best of a bad bunch.
