Rock Concert Time-Travel

slightly off topic- I read somewhere the Beatles last official concert 08/29/66 in SFO lasted around thirty minutes. Was that standard for concerts back then, or was there a problem?

Police on the Synchronicity Tour.

March 8, 1981, The Paradise in Boston: U2 opening for Mission of Burma.

U2 at Red Rocks.

U2 opened for Mission of Burma? I wondered how they came to name one of their albums** Vs.**

That’s what some of my crazy U2 friends tell me… I actually saw MoB at the Paradise a couple of weeks ago–great time.

Oh, man, I bet. What did they close with? Just because I want some other detail of it.

That was pretty standard for a Beatles show, and other shows of the day. This was before the now-common rock concert experience, the longish, pot-smoke-enshrouded tribute to a group’s body of work, maybe with an opening act, always with a couple of encores. We all know the routine.

In the Beatles’ day (when they were still touring), it was more of the traveling ensemble show, several acts, all of whom played shortish sets (kind of like the bill Buddy Holly was on the night he died). At Candlestick, the Cyrkle, the Remains and the Ronettes all opened for the Beatles. Three acts before the headliners. They were an hour and a half into the show before the Beatles took the stage. Low-end tickets cost $3.80, by the way.

So, no, no problem. That’s just how it was then.

I always wondered about that. Frampton was not the mega-star that album made him, but the record always felt different, like the audience knew something special was happening. Sounds like that’s the way it felt from someone there.

The Beatles and The Clash, any time (though I don’t count the post-Mick Jones band as the “real” Clash).

Husker Du any time between '85-'87.

Gang Of Four, '79.

XTC, '82 (before they quit touring).

Television, CBGB, '77 or so.

Maybe throw The Smiths in there somewhere.

Other than those, I think I’ve seen pretty much everybody I wanted to.

Funny, I have no recollection! One thing I do remember is that they did NOT play Smells Like Teen Spirit. In thinking about it, I started wondering if I could possibly remember that correctly, so I Googled around and found a site that lists their song sets from their concerts. Turns out, I was right…it says on the website that it was not played at that show. But then, they also claim that the crowd booed the band, and I don’t remember that at all.

According to the site, Endless, Nameless was the last song.

I was completely sober during the show, I swear! It was just so long ago that my memory is hazy!!!

Endless, Nameless, you mean that song with all the screaming and distorted guitars?

I had some pals that were at that Chicago show and told me that exact story. I had seen Nirvana the night before in Davenport, IA. They were fabulous.

Since no one has mentioned them…I’ll take my time machine back to 1969 and catch the Velvets at Max’s Kansas City.

That is so funny…I guess I can remember SOME stuff from back in the day! It was really a great show.
