Rock Dopers: Royal Blood - I like 'em

You heard these guys? Bass player and drummer - bassist adds effects to sound like a guitar, similar to Jack White in the White Stripes but as a guitarist adding bass…

Love this song, Figure it Out, and the video is like a great mini-movie: Royal Blood - Figure It Out (Official Video) - YouTube

Another cool song - Little Monster: Royal Blood - Little Monster (Official Video) - YouTube

Meh, not bad. Not really my style, but they have a great sound. A tad heavy on the pop and not enough emphasis on the rock IMO, but any band that is willing to explore and exploit odd combos is okay with me (Morphine, Flat Duo Jets, etc.).

bump for a Monday morning.

Anyone else listened to these guys?

Yeah, sounded a lot like from Death From Above 1979, who had the same drum/bass setup.

OK, I know I’m late to this party, but I discovered for myself a few months ago and I can’t stop listening to their album. I love their sound.

I played them for a friend and he loved how they have a grunge sound, but without the uninflected vocals. The guy is a great singer.

I kept seeing how they only have two members in the band, drum and bass, and I figured that they had a guitar player for the studio or for live performances. Nope. The bass player runs his sound through some effects and through a guitar amp, as well as through a bass amp. They claim that everything they play, they can play live.

So, after tooling around the internet to find info about them, I decided to check the trusty SDMB, and here I am, 8 months late.

I saw them live earlier this year when they came to Plymouth, and they were amazing.

I definitely like em.

OK, bumping this zombie for a second time because…

I’m seeing them on Tuesday!! They open for Queens of the Stone Age at the Garden. I’m really looking forward to it.

I was going to open a new thread entitled: Royal Blood: Great new band or best new band? But then I remembered posting in an existing thread, so I reanimated the zombie.

WordMan, when thinking about opening a new thread, I was hoping you’d post to it because you are very much in touch with all kinds of music. So, I was pretty happy to see that you had actually created this thread all those years ago.

Since then, they’ve released a second album that I like at least as much as the first. They moved a little away from their very basic set up and have some harmonies and even some keyboards, but I think they’ve added some funk and held onto all the angst.

I spoke to someone today whose friend saw the same show and said that Royal Blood really eclipsed QotSA, so I’m even more excited to see them.

Anyway, has anyone listened to the second album? What are your thoughts?

That I need to get a bit more of my life back! I haven’t listened to RB’s second album, or more than a couple of tracks off QOTSA’s new Mark Ronson-produced album either. I heard TSwift’s first two tracks!:smack:

I’m leading a strategic planning effort for my client and have been for the past few months. The first Board meeting to share it is tomorrow. Nothing like a deeply prepared CEO to keep you on your toes. I think the stress made me a little Pitty ;), you know?

I love what I’ve heard. I agree with how you describe his vocals and how they work with the music. I’m always a bit worried if a small band adds even a little something, but if the songs are there, I’m open.

Two people playing like that is pretty much my favorite thing to do musically. You two must communicate to walk that wire and keep the sound filled. It gives the music a certain energy. When you put that to work on a good song with a rockin arrangement between the two, it’s so good.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring a killer concert for you, RitterSport, and a happy CEO / good meeting for me.

I finally got around to checking out the youtube link and I really like it! Also, I am pretty certain this song is either on the new Madden soundtrack or the Y2K one, can’t remember which. Love that sound.

WordMan, I was worried about the second album, since I loved the first one so much. I was all ready for a disappointment. Sometimes bands grow in a way that I don’t like, sometimes they don’t grow at all, and some artists only have one good album in them anyway. I think these guys grew modestly in a direction that I love. I couldn’t have been happier with it.

Good luck with the meeting! Try not to get all BBQ Pit on them if they ask stupid questions.
FoieGrasIsEvil, I’m glad you liked it. Find more - the music is great and the videos are pretty cool, too.

This is the first song I heard them play.

Which I liked a lot and then listened to their albums, which i didn't.

MiM

The show was great! They blew away the headliner, I think. It probably helps that I know all of their songs but only a fraction of Queens of the Stone Age material.

Hopefully, your presentation killed it, too.

Very cool, although Josh Hinke is known for a good show, so I bet you’re right about knowing the songs.

My presentation went well, thanks. Now to prep for the next in the series!
