Rockies vote to help widow of Coolbaugh (accid.-killed coach)

A nice gesture. Not that I’m cynical or anything, but what would a share be worth?

They voted to give them a full share of the play-off pool. How much it’s worth depends on how far the Rockies go. A share of the Cardinals pool last year was worth about $362,000 or so. (Cardinals won the series). Lowest share last year was around $10,000. Rockies seem to be headed to the NLCS, so should be worth more than that.

FWIW, the sons of Coolbaugh are scheduled to throw out the opening pitch for the first Rockies home game. They are 5 and 3 years old. I expect there will not be a dry eye in the house.

As an aside for those interested, a pretty darn good article about Mike Coolbaugh in Sports Illustrated.

And to answer the OP:

"The number of full shares a team decides upon will determine the amount of the share. Last year, full shares for the St. Louis Cardinals, who won the World Series, were a record $362,173. They beat the Detroit Tigers, whose full shares were $291,668.

Full shares for the teams that lost in the League Championship Series last year were $140,625 for the Oakland Athletics and $124,430 for the New York Mets.

Full shares last year for the four teams that lost in the Division Series ranged from $27,035 for the Los Angeles Dodgers to $37,539 for the Minnesota Twins."

All the more reason for the Rockies to do their damnedest to win!

Yes. Yes, it was. Many thanks.

::bump::

The Rockies having choked in the World Series, anyone know how much Mrs. Coolbaugh will be getting?

I don’t think they have been announced yet (should be any day, though) but last year the runner-up Tigers each got $291,667.68 for a full share. The Tigers also got swept, so I would guess that Mrs. Coolbaugh should be looking at close to $300K.

Not bad.

Nitpick

The Tigers managed to win one game, IIRC.

As Lamar Mundane said, playoff shares have not been announced yet. Usually it’s done around mid-November though, so we should know pretty soon.

Playoff shares for players are based on the revenues from the first four games. The last three games go to the owners. This keeps the players from having an incentive to throw games to get a bigger paycheck.
