Holy crap. That was an amazing game. I hope the blown call at the end doesn’t over shadow the game/season for the Rockies.
Assuming we didn’t see the game, what was the blown call?
Winning run never touched the plate.
If I had to guess - and I do - the safe call was made because holliday was injured.
Great game.
You think the umpire felt sorry for him?
I was certainly voting for the Rockies since Clint Hurdle was my boyhood hero(they even mentioned my home town in the post game interview with Clint )
but it sure didnt look like Halliday got the plate.
Unbelievable!
Even if he didn’t touch the plate, the earlier homerun that bounced off a wheelchair and back onto the field was ruled a double. Game should have been over in nine innings.
Congratulations to the Rockies, they played an exciting game. I lived in Denver and went to many Rockies games over the course of 6 or 7 years. I suffered through bad seasons, cheered for the Blake Street Bombers, Walker’s MVP, the first Wild Card series in 1995. I’m glad to see the Rockies give their fans a reason to believe. I’m torn between rooting for the D’Backs or Rockies now, but Arizona has their Series championship, so I’m pull for the Rockies as long as they stay in it.

No, I thought he’d called him safe because he would have got back to the plate if he hadn’t been hurt. A judgement call in extenuating circumstances, so to speak.
I agree, but on further review, it looks like the ump might not have had a clear view, what with the catcher illegally blocking the plate while not in possession of the baseball and all. It looks like he would have seen Holliday’s hand heading for the plate, and lost sight of it behind the catcher’s leg. He’d been making very slow calls all night.
Ah, good point.
After watching the HD replays a few times, I think it’s entirely possible Holliday’s fingertip could’ve touched the plate. (For some reason, TBS comes in at a slightly better quality than YouTube on our cable.)
Either way (and especially since my team wasn’t involved) that was an amazing baseball game.
Sounds like Holliday is going to be OK. I expected his hand to be mangled after he shoved it right through the catcher’s spikes. Not to mention his face plant.
Wooohoooooo!!!
Go Rockies!
Man am I gonna be late for work tommorrow!
I am gonna have a hard time getting the kid up for school tomorrow. He’s really, really excited. And he’s going to a playoff game on Friday! He has already sent gloating emails to his big brothers, who never got to do this in their home town.
I went to bed after the Padres put up 2 and had Hoffman coming in.
I was tired. Heck of a game to that point (what I caught during football commercials, and post football).
I’m not normally a Ripken fan, but I liked him in the studio.
I’m rooting for the Phillies, and I was hoping to get Padres. Two hottest teams in baseball playing each other now. Should be a good one.
I’ve never been a big fan of baseball on TBS, but I’m now glad that they got part of the postseason. Imagine that, they waived their right to sell commercials and had breaks with Ripken talking baseball. What a pleasant change. And we’ve got games starting at 5:00 and 6:30 in the first round, meaning first shift workers and children won’t stay up too late.
This game was a classic, unfortunately the end came well after I was out of gas.
Cubs games start aat 10pm EST. I’ll be up late. That sucks.
I know. But I think that TBS is doing a better job of keeping most games early than Fox did and they deserve some credit. When you’ve got three games in one day to cover someone has to get stuck with the late one.
That ump was Tim McClelland who is known and much despised for being one of the slowest umpires on calling Balls and Strikes.
BTW: High Profile games seem to find this guy. One of his first games was the famous “Pine Tar” incident and he was plate Umpire for the Sammy Sosa Corked Bat Game. He was also there for George Brett’s 3000th hit and behind the plate again for Boomer Well’s Perfect Game.
I fell asleep in the 8th inning, I missed all the controversial calls. I watched the replay this morning about 4 times and I agree the call was bad, but bang-bang enough not to kill the Ump for it. I just wish he would call the Balls and Strikes quicker.
Congrats to the Rockies, one of the great comebacks of all times. That is 3 teams that were not considered to have much of a chance before the All Star game that all made the post season. This is cool.
Jim
Great leadup to the playoffs!
Every time I turned to the game we gave up a lead. Damn good thing I stopped watching and let them win, eh?
You’re welcome, Colorado. It was all my doing.
