Yesterday as I was driving home, a dumptruck filled with gravel passed me and some of the little rocks flew out of the back and hit my car. One of the rocks hit the top left corner of my windshield and now there’s a hairline crack.>< Great. Now I have to replace the windshield AND get my car re-inspected since when I get the windshield replaced, the old inspection sticker won’t be able transfer even though I JUST got the damn car inspected back in March.
I hate gravel trucks.
Stupid rock spewing pieces of motor-oil soaked…pieces of crap.>< I know this is rather weak but it’s the best I can come up with at 3 AM when I’m sick to my stomach from my monthlies.
Down in the half-lit bar of the hotel
There’s a call for the last round of the day.
Push back the stool, take that elevator ride.
Fall in bed and kick my shoes away,
kick my shoes away, kick my shoes away.
Rocks on the road.

Sorry, it was the first thing I thought of. Yeah, those trucks suck.
I had to call my insurance company last night about my husband’s windshield. He caught a rock that caused a crack that’s making its way across the driver’s side. Since we’re insured in Florida, we get non-deductible glass replacement, so that’s something. But the car is barely a year old! We’re convinced it’s cursed, but that’s another rant.
Really Arky?? I didn’t know that but when we get it replaced I’ll make sure and ask. In Concievable–No I did not.Was too busy paying attention to the road in front of me and laughing my ass off at Russ Martin getting his tooter probed by an ass doctor on live radio. Next time I’ll be more aware.
If the crack isn’t too big (your windshield, not Russ Martin) you can have the fracture terminated and sealed with a drill bit and epoxy. Check with your yellow pages or local mechanic.
Weird- the same thing happened to me yesterday. Although, my windshield just chipped, and didn’t crack. Anyone know if my lease company will have kittens when I return the vehicle? If so, I’m going after the gravel hauler.
Now I’ll have to go out and look at the crack to see how big it is…it’s not very big at all and if they can just seal it or whatever so it doesn’t get any bigger…I’ll be happy. It’s not a big ding anyway and I barely notice it when driving so I’ll check that out. Thanks for the advice!
Problem with going after the gravel hauling company is that most of these dumptrucks have signs on them saying something to the effect of “stay back at least 500 feet. Not responsible for windshield damage,” or some such, which gives them an out if trouble pops up. They can always say that it was your fault for following too close.
not that I agree with that practice, but there ya go.
You are responsible anytime something you are hauling falls off your vehicle and hits something. Having a sign that says you aren’t responsible doesn’t make it so.
Blessedwolf–I didn’t notice if they had one of those signs or not but I wasn’t that close to him…maybe 2 car lengths behind him for JUST that reason…so gravel wouldn’t pummell my car.
Argh. CG will be home in a little while and I’ll tell him what I found out from youse guys.,
This is making me wanna hurl rocks at somebody now.>_<
Oh and get this…yesterday while driving to the library I noticed the crack had gotten larger. Previously…it had just kinda looked like a line radiating out from the strike point. NOW it’s got a little downturn so it looks like an L laying on it’s side. We’re supposed to call the insurance people today to see what kind of coverage we have on this sort of thing. Oh boy.
CG called me earlier and I guess he was also talking to a windshield repairman via 3-way calling at work. He asked me where exactly the crack was located, size of the crack, etc. I guess he was getting quotes on repair costs. Oh boy.
Can’t wait to see how this turns out.
Barbarian: the reason for that is that most large herbivores tend to be salt-deprived. So if they use salt on the road, all the moose are like ``hey, free salt-lick!’’ I’ll take a piece of gravel dinging my windshield over a frikken moose anyday
Well we got the windshield repaired today. So two hours and $250 later I have a new windshield. What’s the deductible on my insurance for things like this? $300. Damn. Oh well.
At least I have a new windshield.
