rodent taxonomy

I was watching TV and that blockbuster commercial with the cgi rabbit and guinea pig came on. It got me wondering: I know rabits are lagomorphs, but are lagomorphs rodents or a separate group on the same level?

Lagomorphs are an order, and therefore on the same taxonomic level as the order Rodentia (in which they were formerly included).

Rodents are not part of the lagomorph family, IIRC.

Lagormorpha (hares, rabbits and pikas) and Rodentia (rodents) are sister groups, which together make up the clade (a group descended from a common ancestor) Glires. Under the Linnaean classification scheme, both are Orders.

This site gives the origin of rodents, the distinction between them and Lagomorpha, and notes “Grandorder Anagalida” as synonymous with Glires. The University of Michigan Animal Diversity site has a page listing the characteristics shared by rodents and links to each of the 29 families of Rodents.
