Rolled oats past expiry

I have an unopened bag of rolled oats (oatmeal) which has passed the expiry date printed on it. Now, this is just a matter of curiosity since I am certainly wealthy enough to buy a new bag.

Anyway, the bag seems to have passed the expiry date by nearly a year. These things have a pretty long shelf life anyway, so how bad have these likely become?

They have been stored in an unopened paper bag in a pantry (dry, dark, about room temp). Visually, and by smell, I can’t distinguish the contents from the contents of a newly opened bag.

Does anything change in the case where they would be boiled before ingestion?

Thanks in advance!

I’m still using eight year old oats that are stored in gallon glass jars and other than a slightly off taste when eaten plain they are fine. Couldn’t tell you when their freshness date was, but I’m cure they are well past their date.

If they look fine, smell fine and taste fine, I’d eat 'em.

The nutritional compounds break down over time, so you’ve lost some of that. There is no other reason not to use it.
