I am not one- I do love old cars. (I would hasten to add I don’t dislike them- I just would never have thought I could have afforded one).
Anyway, I was driving into the city today and a beautifully preserved old car was behind me, then along side and that sort of thing for a few miles.
I immediately thought a Rolls and it had the familiar Eleanor Thornton figurine on the bonnet.
Superb condition - white walled tyres and absolutely sparkling.
I did a search online and didn’t come up with much.
I believe it was a Silver Cloud III (I was trying to look while driving) which surprised me slightly as it seemed to me earlier than the 50’s/ 60’s.
One thing I did clearly notice was that their were buttons on the door to press to open them.
The one surprising thing to me however was that online the model didn’t seem all that expensive- like around $80,000 today. Is this a true reflection or did I misunderstand the sites I looked at? I don’t think there were huge numbers made.
I’ve always been a huge British car fan. I’ve had over a hundred.
The only RR I had was given to me by a dear friend long after it was considered “expensive”.
It was a 1970 Cornichehardtop, and I should never have sold it.
If you’ll look on Ebay, you’ll find that even some recent models are less that you might pay for a new Mercedes or Lexus SUV.
I own a 1970s Silver Shadow that I paid just over £5000 for a few years ago. Prices have gone up in the last 18 months, but you can still get a presentable and drivable example for the price of a second hand Ford. Keeping it on the road and running well is where the real expense comes from. Which is why mine is sat on the drive and hasn’t moved in over a year.
I am also a HUGE British car fan, but the most I’ve only had was less than half-a-dozen; a Rover sedan and a Triumph GT6, MkIII were my personal favorites.
I greatly appreciate RR, especially the older, sleeker versions – say, pre-1970s…
