Keeping with the Jane Austen theme, how about Harriet Smith and her romantic roller coaster compared to the title character, Emma, whose love interests were pretty brief and boring.

Not so much a seconday romance, but Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s character in Along Came Polly was far more entertaining than what Jennifer Anniston and Ben Stiller were doing.
Not a comedy, but The English Patient. I detested the main characters and hoped they’d die sooner rather than later. I thought the romance between the nurse and the Sikh was much more interesting and romantic.
