Roman Polanski

anyone like him?
I love him and I find his films have such a creepy feel.

I like rosemarys baby and the ninth gate

That’s sort of like being a fan of OJ Simpson after the double murder. Someone can have tremendous talent but their private lives are so horrific that I can’t like them.

I loved The Pianist but he has that Michael Jacksonesque vibe about him.

Quaaludes & booze in the hot tub? “You’re six^H^H^H thirteen, you’re beautiful, and you’re mine”

Meh, whatever he did was his buisness and the victim, victim’s friends, and victims family. I don’t, or atleast try not to, judge people on their actions.

With that being said, Knife in the Water is my favorite Polish film that I have ever seen. Wonderfully tense, great pacing, and all done with three people and a boat. Probably is, now that I think about it, my favorite “minimalist” film.

So you are saying that you are okay with the statutory rape and his fleeing justice?

The court transcripts are available on www.thesmokinggun.com. They’re interesting if you have some time on your hands and want to read them.

He’s guilty of a crime, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy his movies. And he did have such a sad thing happen with the whole Sharon Tate murder thing. It makes me feel sorry for him.

Then what do you judge them by?

The Fearless Vampire Killers. That’s all.

Jeez, this far in the thread, and no mention of one of the Great American Movies: Chinatown!

Don’t approve of what he did and hope I never meet him in person, but you can add surviving the Holocaust on top of the horrible Sharon Tate tragedy, so the guy has led a one-of-a-kind life, that’s for sure. And he is incredibly talented to boot.

By judge I was implying a negative judgement, a judgement that would negatively affect my impression of them, and not judgement in general. I, of course, judge everyone on their actions, I just don’t use that judgement against them. Maybe I’m just young and naive, but I try to live life without any negative associations.

(BTW, it’s good to see “Charter” back - I can’t be the only one around here who felt your tag needed something.)

It’s not so much as me being okay with it, it’s just that I accept it as something that happened and move on. Maybe he has changed, maybe he hasn’t - regardless, I won’t stop liking his films. That’s all I really meant, anyway. I’m just being needlessly opaque to-day.

Sorry for the confusion, all, and sorry to the OP for the hijak.

A friend and I have had similar conversations about Michael Jackson and Richard Wagner.

Is Jackson a creepy, lying child molester who’s much too fond of cosmetic surgery? Yes.

And was the album “Thriller” a tour de force of pop music? Certainly.

Was Wagner a malignant anti-Semite whose music was exploited (surely with his approval, had he lived) by the Nazis? Yes.

But could he write sweeping, evocative music that still knocks my socks off? You bet.

I respect the views of - and will not attempt to dissuade - anyone who finds an artist’s conduct or political views so personally repugnant that he or she will shun the artist’s work.

It’s a valid POV, just one I don’t happen to share. I draw a distinction between the person and the art, and can hate the one while savoring the other.

Maybe I’m just compartmentalizing? Yeah, maybe…

I think it could be interesting to read this story. His victim has let it go.

Mentioning O.J. and Polanski in the same sentence is just wrong. Or was the later suspected of killing his wife and unborn child? Why don’t we bring Scott Peterson into the discussion?

I am a big fan of his films. My favorite is 'The Tenant ’ made in 1976.
