Romantic things to do in and around Austin TX

My bf is moving there at the end of Aug. He is used to living in larger cities so he would like big city kinds of things but he is also very outdoors kinds of person. So TX dopers…things to do for two people who are very in love?

(He’ll be living in the Round Rock area.)

Go to Mt. Bonnel when there’s a full moon.

Hmmm, I just might have to do that. I am not from Austin so I am not familiar…but I’ll find it.

Ah, you’re moving to my neck of the woods. Welcome!

I’m the outdoors type as well, so I might be able to help you.

Hiking the Barton Creek Greenbelt is a lot of fun- especially when the creek’s flowing. You’ll be amazed that a wilderness area like that is actually a city park.

Another good place to go to is Enchanted Rock- but, please, for your own sake, don’t go during the summer. If you get the chance, see a meteor shower there. You won’t regret it. It’s about ninety miles west of Austin, near Fredericksburg.

Tubing down the Guadalupe, down near New Braunsfel, is a GOOD thing to do during the hot summers. That’s about 45 minutes south of Austin on IH35.

Closer to your area is the Blue Hole park in Georgetown, a great swimming hole on the San Gabriel river. Not really romantic, but nice.

Go see a movie! You’ll love the Alamo Drafthouse. First run movies, with dinner and beer. It’s my favorite theatre (and now there’s three of 'em in Austin).

Oh that is awesome. I actually live in San Antonio so I am familiar with Fredericksburg & the Guadalupe, New Braunfels etc… even Gruene. But the other stuff I wasn’t. We will be doing a good deal of commuting so I need to know some things to do up in his area. We have spent some time on 6th Street (of course) and had some fun up at the Capital last week. But that is all cool stuff.

Thanks Lightnin and Ringo!

You could drive up to driftwood and go to the saltgrass. That is, if you find BYOB and all you can eat bar-b-q romantic. My girlfriend and I also like going to Katz’s real late, but then again you might not find turkey-ham on swiss at 1 in the morning as sexy as I do. I 'd also recomend driving up to lake travis for the day. The area is beautiful and hella fun.

Then again, you could just peel off each other’s clothes that are now sticking to you like cling film because of the humidity.

I always get kinda sweaty when he is around…but now that you mention it we tend to peel each others clothes off too! Look how handy that is!

Well, blame it on the humidity and don’t even blink! [grin]

Watch the bats come out! From the txcountyaustinattractions website:

The best time to view the bats is during the month of August when the newborn bats begin to come out with their mothers. The Bats at the Bridge are Mexican free-tail bats (Tadarida brasiliensis). The bridge is the new Congress Avenue Bridge. It is home to over 1.5 million bats.

messed that post up big-time. :smack:

Though some of the Congress Avenue Bridge’s bats have relocated, having gotten sick of tourists. Typical Austinites.

Austin has a real wealth of parks and outdoor attractions. I personally love the Botanical Gardens, especially the Japanese Garden in the corner. They tend to be a mite crowded during their best seasons, though, so the romance level can be kind of lowered.

Mt. Bonell and Enchanted Rock are excellent suggestions…I love climbing Enchanted Rock, even in summer – the breezes are so lovely up there.

Go eat at Romeo’s if you like Italian food and a romantic atmosphere. I, however, am one of those utter vile heathens who prefers Vinny’s for her Italian…

Gosh, there really should be an Austin Dope get-together.

Hey, we were just down on Congress last week…messin’ around at the Capital bldg…truly messin’ around if you get my drift. There is that little marble gazebo bldg out in front of the capital…holy smokes it’s kind of shadowy at night. We walked there from 6th street and ended up there b/c all the secluded doorways were either inhabited by sleeping bums or smelled like piss. I’m totally digging this town BTW.

We played trivia at some bar called BD Rileys and just kind of wandered on up the hill…

Again, Mt. Bonnel for sunsets is just an incredible sight. Also, there’s a little restaraunt off of 620 called the Oasis. The food’s not all that spectacular, and it’s a little pricey, but my GOD, the view is breathtaking. Nice outlook over Lake Travis, and they make a big to-do about sunsets there. Absolutely beautiful. A couple of margaritas, a nice sun dress, and a good sunset makes for a wonderful evening.

There’s also picnics at Barton Springs, although I find walking along by the dog pond late at night much more appealing, especially on an evening with a full moon.

You can also rent canoes and kayaks (could I spell that word any more wrong?) and travel around town lake for the day.

There’s also the Umlau Sculpture Gardens if you like the artsy stuff. It’s set outside. Not all that big, but very peacefull and on a good day, very nice.
