Rome 07/01/28 (spoilers)

Antony had two daughters with Octavia, both of them named Antonia.

From wikipedia

Um, folks… The thread is marked as having spoilers. We don’t have to window box everything. Especially history, for crying out loud.

Dude, weren’t you, like, totally surprised when they killed Caesar in the finale of Season 1? I so totally didn’t see that coming!!

OK, maybe I erred on the side of caution by spoiler-boxing the (close your eyes!) impending Antony - Octavia nuptials. But I could envision some people here being upset to have this info spoiled…oh well.

I’m in favor of spoiler boxes if we’re going to be talking about events that haven’t happened on the show yet.

Not all of us are familiar with this period of history, especially the details of the relationships.

I realize it puts a damper on the discussion for Dopers who are Roman history buffs, and while I like hearing what the experts have to say, it does spoil the show.

We don’t know that it will spoil the show. The history only gives us broad outlines, not really details about how anything will be portrayed on the show. I don’t think factual history deserves to be spoiler boxed.

Knowing that Antony eventually marries Octavia is a spoiler even if it doesn’t happen on the show, because it affects how I look at Antony and Atia’s relationship. I’ll be waiting for the breakup, and if the breakup doesn’t happen, I’ll wonder why.

In any case, it’s an event that will (or won’t) happen in future episodes, so giving it away (even if it doesn’t happen) constitutes a spoiler.

In the Deadwood threads, Dopers were careful to spoiler box the fact that Deadwood burned down and that the Earps visited Deadwood. These historical events were known by people who were up on their history, but they hadn’t happened on the show yet so they were boxed.

I hate spoiler boxes on general principle; they are annoying to triple-click (I use the scroll wheel auto-scrolling to read threads) and it hurts my eyes to read light text on dark backgrounds. Even still, I can understand and begrudgingly accept that future show events are in fact spoilers even if they are real historical events. The exception would be in a thread not devoted to a show; a Rome fan would have to be pretty self-absorbed to complain about spoilers in a GQ thread about actual Roman history, for example.

In any case, we can all agree that spoiler boxes without any identifying info at all are pointless and annoying. Not to single you out or anything, BobT, but how are we supposed to know whether we can read your spoiler or not?

The “German slut” looked pretty skinny though we didn’t see much of her…the kitchen slave definitely was plump. I don’t think Atia would deem her “Antony-material”.

Anyhow, its going to be interesting to see how they’re planning to compress history into the remaining seven episodes…

But I feel singled out! And persecuted! I’m going to go all Mark Antony on you like the guy reading Cicero’s letter at the Senate

I put the info into a spoiler box because it referred to an event between characters on the show who are not part of the historical record and what was described would only make sense in the world of people watching “Rome” on HBO.

Still, Lib makes a valid point that the thread title already contains a spoiler warning.

It does, so I’d expect to be spoiled for anything that happened in that episode and prior episodes, but not for something that’s going to happen in future episodes.

How is discussing the historical record different from an insider giving away the ending of something fictional?

Would it just be better if I didn’t say anything?

  1. You put in information about future episodes, people get mad.
  2. You put in spoiler tags, people get mad.

No, the content of your spoiler boxes was fine. Just, there was no lead-in. Adding a preface outside of the box would have made it a textbook example of how one is supposed to use them. (For example: “Something I heard about Atia and Servillia next episode:” or “For those who watch the ‘next week on Rome’ previews, check this out:”)

In various shows discussed, the rules about ‘next week on’ teasers varies. In 24 threads they are boxed, but in Lost threads they are not. I prefer not, but that’s just my opinion.

AuntiePam gave an excellent board-wide definition for what putting the word “spoilers” in the thread title means. Note that the only reason that we have to note spoilers in thread titles in the first place is because some of the louder west coast posters can’t be bothered to tell the time, so they complain if we discuss shows in the two hour window between a show ending on the east coast and it starting on the west coast. Lame and stupid, IMO, but just putting the word in the title is infinitely better than cluttering up the thread with a ton of spoiler boxes.
