Rome 10/30 (open spoilers)

That’d be cool. Except for the deadly consequences part.

I agree that some conflict between Pullo and Vorenus is likely, but HBO has touted the series as being about those two and their relationship as much as it is about Caesar and the big shots, so I’m thinking both characters will stick around.

All the speculation about what becomes of Pullo: am I the only one who’s seen the preview where he becomes a gladiator? There’s several scenes of that in the series summary About ROME available on HBO on Demand.

Sorry, I forgot this was “open spoilers”. There are also many scenes of Titus Pullo as a gladiator in The Making of ROME.

Lucius has been in his new toga for ten minutes and you guys are already predicting the end of his and Pullo’s relationship. Give them a break. They have been together for YEARS! They are war buddies. They are like an old married couple. Lucius’ new position won’t change things much. Lucius will appoint Titus to some lush post and they will go gumping forward as usual.

So what if Titus gets a little Gladiator Glory on the side every once in awhile.

Did anyone else notice that Vorenus’s toga wasn’t serged?

Please explain what “serged” means and its significance.

The word serge has meaning both as a noun and verb. Serge itself is a type of fabric.

As a verb “to serge” means to bind or overcast the edge of a fabric, to keep it from unraveling. I’ll have to watch again tonight, but I presume what was meant was that the edge of the toga(it was probably wool), was not hemmed or bound.

In those scenes that I saw it seemed like he was not there by choice.

…and the significance if Vorenus’ toga wasn’t serged?

I took it to mean that his station still wasn’t going to be that high, that he won’t be rubbing elbows with the truly rich and famous. No invites to Attia’s shindigs, and whatnot. Then again, my wife thought it meant that Niobi was only fitting him.

Things I don’t like:
Octavia and Servilia. To say that both their charachters and their actions are unbelievable is a major understatement.

Roman soldiers were forbidden to marry, so even if Pullo were to free his slave, she couldn’t become his wife.

Hated Cleopatra…just…eugh

The fact that it feels like we’re watching the severely edited highlights, and that the editing hasn’t been in the right places.

C’mon, is it too much to ask for some actual historical accuracy here?

Despite the attempts to move the plot forward, I felt that the whole episode fell flat.

I finally watched this on On-Demand last night. My heart absolutely broke for Pullo. No one is joyful that he’s home from war. He tries so hard to show his slave that he wants her as something much more meaningful than as a slave. In the end they both know what her role truly is. Heartbreaking.

We know a foreshadowing when we see it, by gum!

(Don’t touch the toga! You’ll get it dirty!)

Isn’t Vorenus a Roman soldier? I’m confused.

He is but he said that he got ‘a special dispensation’ to allow him to marry.

I must’ve been in the kitchen pouring another glass of wine. I missed that.

Thank you.

Regarding Lucius & Titus, how often have we seen this theme? It’s like all those highschool shows where you’ve got two friends, one of them gets accepted by the “in” crowd, and the other gets snubbed. But what always happens in the end?

Plus, Titus isn’t going to be sitting around bored for too long. He’ll remain loyal to his buddy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Pullo & Octavian team up again to deal with the fact that Octavian spilled the beans about Lucius’ wife. At first I thought that was meaningless (after all, Lucius is a nobody, and I got the distinct impression he knows about his wife’s infidelity, but along with Pullo’s urging, decided to forgive & forget & start over.) but as soon as Lucius got promoted - yup. Pullo will have Lucius’ back, even if Lucius doesn’t always know it.

It came as no surprise to me that Caesar promoted Lucius, as he made it clear Lucius & Titus are somehow favored by the gods. But how they did it took me by surprise, and was a great scene.

I do feel bad about Pullo & his slave girl. I still don’t understand how it all works. Pullo was the son of a slave, so wouldn’t he still be a slave? How did he get un-slaved? Just by joining the military?

I feel certain that Atia (that bitch!) was behind Servilia’s attack, but what I don’t understand is how she can get away with such a direct assault.

Octavia made Octavian promise never to tell what they did, yet someone obviously told Atia. I’m hoping that meddling slave woman gets it eventually.

I thought soldier were allowed to marry. Does anyone have a cite for the opposite? I mean, after all, GJC is married, GPM was married, all the other higher ranking officers would almost have to be. Pre-dating this show, Gaius Marius was married, well, I could go on.

What was the significance of the battle of Thaspus? I was surprised there were any battles left to fight – after Pompey’s death, and Cicero & Brutus surrendered, I thought the civil war was over.

Was Erestes the same thug that briefly employed Vorenus as a loan collector/leg breaker?

Atia spied on them.
