Yesterday, I along with 100,000 people or so around the world virtually attended the Metropolitan Opera’s performance of Gounod’s “Romeo & Juliet”. watching it via HD live feeds into our local movie theaters. There were some technical glitches though. The sound dropped out several times. Also the contrast was horrible. The whole thing looked dark and washed out, even when the house lights were on. I read some reviews today, but I didn’t see any mention of these problems. One noted some “dips in volume” at the beginning of the performance, but that’s not the same thing. I was hoping some of the Dopers also attended and could tell me if these problems were in the broadcast, or just my theater. If not, do you know anyone else who attended? Let’s get this six degrees of separation thing working! Thanks!

P.S. I’m not a huge opera fan, but even I could tell this was a stunning performance (technical challenges notwithstanding). Of course, nothing beats being there, but there are some advantages to seeing it virtually, including better than front row viewing, being backstage during scene changes, and live interviews with the performers during intermission. I really recommend trying this out to anyone with even a passing interest in opera. This was the first of eight operas they will broadcast this season.
