Wait, does just having our embassy in Tel Aviv mean that we officially consider that to be the capital? I was under the impression that several countries had their embassy to the US in New York instead of in Washington, and nobody claims that New York is the real capital of this country.

Those are probably the embassies to the UN, not the US.

There are several consulate in NYC, but I don’t think there are any embassies, and every country with a consulate in NYC also has an embassy in DC.
