Chinese residents of Florida are looking past the technical details of the bill to its real intent.
I’m sure they believe it’s like the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which was supposed to be very limited in effect, But wasn’t.
Yeah if the bill stopped all foreign residents from owning property, that would be different.
Note that technically, for example, Americans (and likely all foreign) cant own real property is Mexico, to give one example. So it is not like other nations dont have similar laws.
Only specific foreign residents can’t own land. They’re targeting a particular group. If only there was a term for that.
I’m not sure trying to be more like Mexico is a way to improve this country.
At bare minimum, not paying for your freaking wall is a reasonable start.
There was some kerfuffle a few weeks ago about DeSantis’ recently passed law to place draconian penalties on any business hiring undocumented workers.
Lots of people predicted retail and restaurant apocalypse for Florida. That Chicken Little thinking represents playing checkers while DeSantis is playing chess. And utterly mischaracterizes his purpose.
A standard Fascist ploy is to put a law on the books that is practically impossible for the public to abide by. Then don’t place any emphasis on enforcing that law. Except on opponents of the regime, or anyone who needs some pressure applied to do what Der Fuhrer wants this week.
That’s a much more subtle game. But is bog standard is Russia today and was in the 1940s Fascist countries as well. Piss off the Governor and suddenly the state immigration authorities will be all over your construction company or restaurant or whatever checking everyone’s papers. The fact all of your competitors aren’t being investigated will fall on the deaf ears of the pliant courts. You are guilty; prepare to pay huge fines and or serve serious jail time.
And who can complain about a conviction for a clearcut violation of a clearcut law? Surely not the public who wants e.g. illegal immigration curbed anyhow.

Exactly. It’s a “know your place, shut up and keep your head down” law. Make it easy to incur into some violation, and if you don’t play along then that will be used against you. Even if you’re clean we’ll make things hard for you.
The Miami Herald has an article out about DeFuhrer’s new private army and how it’s shaping up to be a disaster.
That was paywalled for me, but I found it elsewhere. These two complaints jumped out at me: “the National Guard’s schedule required training on Sundays” and “the National Guard didn’t have medics available during training.” Neither of them sound great.
A state guard of around 400 to call up in times of disaster to help the citizens of Florida sounds reasonable. Then there’s what it became instead.

That’s just chilling.

It terms of the OP, yeah, in a state with crippling climate change influenced weather, flooding, and lack of protection from said events, instead throwing millions of dollars at a police powered, extra-judicial and armed military with expectations to operate both inside and outside the state is about as fascist as it gets.
It’s a classic “We must defeat our enemies (sotto voce, internal and external), ignore the rot at home” that humanity is so very prone to fall for throughout history.
Sound like Putin’s excuse for invading Ukraine also.

If they didn’t require training on Sundays, but did require it on, say, Saturdays and/or Friday evenings: would anybody in Florida be making a fuss about that?
The lack of medics is another problem; as is the bait-and-switch between an organization intended to help out in a wide variety of emergencies, and one considered primarily as military. And in what sense would they even be authorized to operate in other states? Is De Santis intending to take over the rest of the country by force?
I think this part is simple.
He expects the nearby fascist states to promptly emulate his example, and they’ll set up a mutual fascist-state assistance pact to chase down fugitive slaves wrong-thinking citizens. And to reinforce one another as the respective governors may decide in their sole and unfettered discretion.
