… and even though none of them had seen the first twelve Apollo movies.
Only the second one was good.
Ron Howard is an utterly cynical, corrupt, anti-artistic hack. He hasn’t got an artistic bone in his body. He could suck the life out of any story.
That’s Opie you’re talking about.
Loved A Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13, but not much else of his. Ron Howard has a certain… style, and it only really works with certain plots and certain characters–and movies like The Da Vinci Code (WAG, I haven’t seen it) call for a far different style than his.
I’m dreading this sinking feeling I’m getting off the reviews, I really wanted to see it…
I think he started off very strong:
Apollo 13
Parenthood
Cocoon
Splash
Night Shift
But the last decade or so has been pretty bland.
That’s because it’s true. Please let’s not change history to ‘add things to create a mood of suspense’. We don’t need another JFK.
And if you didn’t think Apollo 13 was full of suspense, I don’t know what to say. It’s a fantastic movie.
Parenthood, Willow, Cocoon, and Splash were also good films.
Movies don’t have to take risks or be challenging to be good; there can still be excellent movies made within traditional Hollywood frameworks. No, Ron Howard isn’t David Lynch – big deal. Based on the movies of his I’ve seen, he’s a better than average director (Apollo 13, Willow, Parrenthood, A Beautiful Mind) with a couple of stinkers under his belt (The Grinch, and apparently The Da Vinci Code).
Lissener had gone too far, and had best watch his mouth.
The main thing I remember about Backdraft was that The Silence of the Lambs stole its thunder by doing the “let’s find the key to this mystery by interviewing a crazy motherfucker in prison” storyline just a few months earlier.
Yeah, but we all know about your taste in movies…
I can’t say anything bad about Opie…even if he occasionally deserves it. I love him.
Apollo 13, Willow and The Beautiful Mind were all good. Cocoon would have been good if it had made any sense. Splash was all right, but nothing really special. All in all, he’s got loads of directors beat.
Ron Howard pops the clutch and tells the world to eat his dust. Actually, it’s hard to think there are many directors who could make a film version of The Da Vinci Code that wasn’t better than the book. Maybe a satirical spoof would be the right approach.
I’m a little diappointed to learn that Ron Howard is directing The Da Vinci Code. I was looking forward to this as an irredeamable schlock-fest, but Howard, while he has made a lot of bad movies, doesn’t make hilariously bad movies. His bad movies just tend to be dull.
But Apollo 13 fuckin’ rocked.

I like Apollo 13 fairly well, but, there is very, very little suspense in it. Pretty dry.

I don’t know what to say to that. The bit at the very end, when the capsule has re-entered the atmosphere, but is still out of radio contact, is one of the great white-knuckle scenes in movies. Gets me every time, even though I know the astronauts all survive.
One moment that really crystallized this for me was a scene in A Beautiful Mind in which John Nash is taken into some secret government room and shown a film of a nuclear test blast while the Ed Harris character explains what it is. Did he really think Nash wasn’t aware of nuclear explosions? I think he just took his audience for such fools that he need to lecture us about this. I never did make it more than halfway through that film. It was so lifeless.
Maybe I’m ignorant about the flim-making process, but wouldn’t this be the fault of the script writer(s)?
Only the second one was good.
Wrath of Gagarin?

Yeah, but we all know about your taste in movies…
Moderator interjecteth: OK, let’s rein this kinda stuff in. You may say whatever you like about the movie, the actors, the director, etc. But you may NOT insult another poster, or impune some motivation to another poster, or “bait” another poster.
I’m not calling this a Warning, RikWriter, I’m just saying it’s a Watch Yer Step, you’re treading along a fine line.
