Roof cladding question

Very briefly, my parents house dates from the 1970’s and as such the roof has a very shallow pitch and has a what I beleive is a felt cladding. The roof will need to be reclad some time in the next few years and my Dad was wondering what the minimum angle is for the different types of cladding tiles, slates etc.

I’m sure that building codes are specific to your area so you should inquire in your own municipality. But where I live if the pitch of a roof is below 1 foot drop off for every 4 feet of distance you need to use some type of “rolled roofing.” Steeper that that you can use shingles.

Felt cladding? Can you explain further? I hear ‘felt cladding’ and I think of the tarred felt paper they used to use in the 30s and 40s.

If your folk’s roof isn’t sloped too much, I assume they’re probably in the south somewhere, where you don’t need to shed all the weight of snow and ice. Out of curiosity, where are they?

As far as municipal codes, generally they apply to newer construction. You aren’t changing the framing of the house, so you might not have to update the slope of the roof to code. However, the method of roofing may have to be brought up to speed. What is the slope of the roof? 1-in-10? 1-in-12?
