Yes, very irresponsible use of date rape drugs, IMNSHO.
It’s called common sense. But it’s not very common.
I can’t find the cite but read that alcohol is the primary intoxicant in the majority of date rapes. Like rohypnol/GHB/benzodiazepines are <10% combined maybe even low single digits. Google fu not working.
As far as bartenders it is probably easier to call the cops if they don’t leave. I have seen bartenders/bouncers get physical at least 4 times, 3 in the same bar and same time (ok the third person I was with and he asked politely to be put in a headlock to put a picture on Facebook. The bouncer asked for a copy )
Anyone else remember when it was spelled “rophy,” and wasn’t plural (roofies)? It came from transposing the P in"Rohypnal," because “Rohy,” and “Ropy” both sounded kinda dumb, and besides, some people transposed the P when they read “Rohypnal,” and got “Rophynal.” I remember in college thinking there were two similarly named drugs, Rophynal, that people talked about, and Rohypnal, that I’d read about. Then, I had the epiphany.
You know that guy who won’t stop talking, you try to say something and he talks over you and he keeps talking and talking and…? I’m betting these are the guys getting drugged.
What can Dopers tell me about scopolamine, a drug used by criminals in parts of South America to strip a victim of free will? The drug derives from plants in the nightshade family, has various medical uses, and was once used as a truth serum in some Communist countries.
In Thailand we hear rumors of a similar drug used here (ยาสั่ง, “medicine for ordering”). Some associate it with scopolamine, but it may be as likely that it’s just a myth.
And that just seems wrong. Not only is it just too complicated, but William of Ockham lived in 13th/14th century England, where at least two of those ingredients make no sense.
99.99% of the time claims by people that they were “roofied” are fig leaves so they don’t have to admit they were drunk off their asses or combining recreational drugs and alcohol and wound up in scenarios that were dangerous or embarrassing. Being roofied can happen, but it’s very uncommon.
And in my experience there are plenty of predators hanging around in dive bars/clubs looking for this, or they target someone already obviously intoxicated and offer then rec drugs they accept. They don’t need to sneak funny tasting powders into drinks or risk the victim noticing, they just look for someone to victimize.
Or “Roofalin,” according to the Hangover. :dubious:
Shouldn’t an Occam’s Razor be straight vodka?
Or someone claimed it happened, when they really just got drunker than they intended. Without some sort of testing, I’d take all “roofied at a frat party” talk with a HUGE grain of salt. Moreso if the story shows up in the evening news.
Not saying it didn’t happen, not saying it never happens, just that I don’t believe it happens anywhere nearly as often as false claims.
Talking about alcohol being the major intoxicant, consider these:
Well, here’s one recent case where GHB was detected: http://www.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/content/20141108-brown-university-student-tested-positive-for-date-rape-drug.ece?click=RB.
However I do agree with you and most everyone else in the thread: use of date rate drugs, except for alcohol, is rare enough to be newsworthy.
As a total lightweight I remember going from zero-to-drunk in “just two drinks” a few times. But in those cases, each drink was something like a long island iced tea with 4-5 units of alcohol, I was starting on an empty stomach, and I was a scrawny 135 pound kid. Another time I had severe allergies and was taking maximum dose benadryl all day, and I fell asleep on a chair halfway through my second beer.
I take your point, but it is the motivation that puzzles me. Slipping stuff into someones drink is far from risk-free, even for the person doing the slipping. I can sort of see how someone intent on rape might think the risk worth the payoff, but if rape is the object, what is the payoff? In most cases, they are not likely to even see much of how their victim is affected (in the case of the article in the OP, only the boyfriend seems to have seen much of the result, and the victim seems convinced he was not the perpetrator), and one does not need to have had too much experience of observing other people under the influence of sedative drugs (indeed, almost all drugs) to know that they are not, really, all that amusing.
Yeah, to a friend of a friend of mine.
Not according to many friends and acquaintances of Bill Cosby.
