Rootbeer: America vs. the world?

You are not thinking of jagermeister, are you?

Dmark I love nutella and agree with you that vegemite is some of the nastiest stuff on earth.

When I asked the server at BJs what brand root beer it is, she said it’s Mug.

-FrL-

Halfway through this thread I had to run to the fridge for a Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray.

Well, I know the BJ’s in SoCal brew their own because I know the brewers. Could be that other location sell Mug. Not that that is a bad thing. Mug is a good brew. But Toby and Owen crank out a pretty good brew themselves out of the Brea location that is shipped all around SoCal.

Two comments.

First, expand “American” to “North American” – it’s just as common in Canada as Stateside.

Second, of the eight or so Europeans I’ve introduced to Rootbeer, I only remember one liking it. And it’s always the last soft drink to go out of stock at our store on campus (student body: 2/3 non-North American). So it seems clear that it’s not very popular with the rest of the world.

BTW, everyone around here loves Nutella, North Americans included.

Somebody upthread mentioned Dog n Suds, and I have to say, their root beer is so much better at their stand. I’ve had it bottled from the store, and its okay, average as far as root beer is concerned. At the stand, though, totally different ball game. There is still one in Lafayette, which is where I tried it.

Why, oh why must you feed my addiction?

Mug isn’t bad, if that’s all that’s available. Their cream soda is okay too.

A&W has a wonderful cream soda, but for some asinine reason, they put caffeine in it. Da’hell? They don’t put it in their root beer.

Nehi used to make a Blueberry Cream Soda that was out of this world-I can’t find it anywhere, sadly.
Peanut butter to me is enough proof of the existance of god.

Next Sunday, I’m going to Dave and Buster’s with my coworkers. Supposedly, they make their own root beer-anyone ever been there?

Great, now I’m jonsing for root beer/cream soda, big time. Thanks, guys.

Mmmmmm Root beer;
mmmmmm Nutella (hazelnuts and chocolate spread, yummy-- accept no house brands!)
mmmmmm birch beer;
mmmmmmm peanut butter, especially the pure kind-- no sugar, salt or hydrogenated oils added;

Has anyone ever had spruce beer? Now THAT I have trouble drinking.

I’ve never had Birch Beer, let alone even seen it in a grocery store.
Is it something readily available ?

BTW, I want to add that I’ve had both the soft drink called spruce beer, and the alcoholic one. I hate them both.

It isn’t nearly as common as root beer. Wendy’s used to always have it on tap – it was redder than root beer, but very similar-tasting. They phased it out several years back.

Sioux City makes a brand of birch beer to go with their sarsaparilla and root beer. All their products have cowboy/Western-themed packaging, and you’ll find the 4-packs of bottles at the end of your soda aisle, near the IBC, Stewart’s, and other less popular, more expensive bottled beverages.

Boylan’s also makes a birch beer, and while I haven’t tried it myself, I can vouch for their root beer being very tasty.

BJ’s here in Eugene also makes their own root beer and it is quite tasty.

They do not, however, make real Chicago Style pizza as they claim. :mad:

In Hong Kong there is a popular drink made from Asparagus!

YICK!

At a grocery store in Tucson known for having a lot of Asian foods and other strange (to me and my friends, back in high school) items, they had cans of something called “grass jelly drink”. My friend Chris tried some. He said it tasted like motor oil, only not as good.

Disgusting? I suspect you are in the minority.

I loathe you and wish to unsubscribe from your newsletter.

OK, now it’s fighting time.

Take a chance. Nutella is orgasmically good.

Oh, yeah. Nutella is heaven. Think hazelnut butter…

I have 3 empty bottles of Virgil’s sitting on my desk right now. But quite honestly, I don’t really know if I’d call it my favorite root beer. I noticed on my last bottle that it had sort of a slight fruity hint that I don’t care for. I like Blue Sky a lot - they make two different kinds, Creamy Root Beer and Root Beer Encore. The Encore kind is made with organic cane sugar, which is a little too sweet-tasting for me to drink more than one can of it at a time. Berghoff is pretty good (there’s a real beer called Berghoff but they also make root beer.) Sioux City Sarsaparilla might be my favorite. Is that actually supposed to be pronounced “SAS-parilla?” Because that is how everyone pronounces it.
